Yeah it's total gross over time will look like a right angle by the time it's finished.

You're not wrong, however, not all is said and done.

So far, TFA hasn't shown that it's gonna tank. It dropped 9.3% more than Avatar monday, but ~9.5% less Tuesday. Let's say it drops 15% today, it's still only 10% behind Avatar for the whole week in terms of drops.

And it's not like anyone expects this movie to hold like Avatar either. Anything close to it is already far beyond expectations. Most movies can be expected to drop 10% more than Avatar every day. If TFA can manage that in the whole week, that's an amazing hold.

And just to be sure mods, we're talking domestic numbers here, not foreign, so is it fine? lol

So now that Avatar domestic strong hold was disposed of in record time what's next?

Billion Dollar watch? I'm skeptical but we'll see.

Small chance for $1b, but it is possible.

$950m should put it in the top 10 adjusted for inflation list though.

I think one important aspect of the run that shouldn't be overlooked is how the massive pre-sales factored into box office this time around.

We've seen in the past that huge pre-sales don't necessarily result in huge opening weekend. They can be an indicator of large up front demand but not subsequent business  i.e. AOU, Fifty Shades of Grey and others.

Star Wars TFA has shown that even with tremendous up front demand, it still attracted a massive audience after the first week as shown by that record breaking 2nd weekend.

It looks like it grossed around $13 million OS yesterday. So through it's first 2 weekdays we're already at $45 million for the week. I only modeled $60 million for Mon-Thurs so we're on pace for a better than expected wordwide Sunday gross ($1.71 billion was the target).

s. p9 ;)

Why I really answer:

please be aware in severeal countries or parts of countries today is a public holiday and X-Mas school holiday also including today.

Btw: Grats to TFA and the whole team, but every one who is into BO knew that TFA will beat avatar dom wise, so for me this didnt come as a surprise. Nevertheless, one of hell BO ride.

Um, no. Prior to release it was not a sure thing. Many people were predicting 500s, some were hoping it could at least take number 1 for 2015. People obviously did not rule out beating Avatar but only a few bullish predictors went that way.

WW is nice and all for Avatar. Bland love stories and main characters that are essentially non-racial have universal appeal. But Avatar is not a part of the cultural fabric of anywhere.

SW is a part of the cultural fabric of the english speaking world.

To get a sense of how fast TFA made some of these marks.

TFA hit 750M on Day 18. JW hit 500 on Day 17, Avatar hit 350M on Day 17.

TFA will hit 800 on either Day 23 or 24. JW hit 550 on Day 24. Avatar hit 400M on Day 23.

TFA will likely outgross JW's 3rd week weekdays (Days 18-21) despite being in the dead of winter and should be +-1M of Avatar's.

Only Daddy's Coming Home (other than TFA) had at a day last weekend higher than TFA's Monday or Tuesday grosses.

Only 6 films (not including TFA) made more the entire last weekend than TFA made on Monday.

Haven't blockbusters on average made 75% of their gross by 20 days?

Yes, at the very least, with an average around 78-79%.

Just looking back the past 10 years for all movies that crossed $400 million domestically:

Jurassic World - ~80%

Marvel's The Avengers - 75.75%

TDK - ~77%

Age of Ultron - ~ 83%

Dark Knight Rises - 81.9%

Catching Fire - 75.8%

Toy Story 3 - 75.4%

Iron Man 3 -84.6%

The Hunger Games - 76.6%

Dead Man's Chest - 78.9%

Transformers: ROTF - 85.1%

But the big exceptions were for Frozen and Avatar.  TFA does not fall into the Frozen or Avatar camp, but it might do (slightly) better than the average recent blockbuster.

Thanks, ectasy; work has been a bit crazy the past few months.  Glad to be back to follow TFA, feels a bit like how it was when Avengers came out.

That actually bodes well for 1b then, since it will be between 76-77% there after day 20.
