I have finally stopped giving a fuck.

I do hope Suicide Squad gets an under 20% rating in there (hopefully somehow under 15 or 10% too) just because the GA seems to be influenced by it a lot these days and Bourne needs all the help it can get for next weekend. Also, fuck superhero movies.

I agree, it needs to hit a 3x so it doesn't sit with Nemesis.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've been enjoying tracking the summer films' critical reception for fun. I get to see where films fall overall; how the critical reception of certain films doesn't align with their performance & how the general public has enjoyed them; how "good" some films are relative to how poorly the summer has been in terms of critical reception - even if reviews don't really matter for our enjoyment of film. I've been enjoying it in the same way that we enjoy tracking films' box office grosses. Someone could easily also ask us all: "why do you guys even bother with box office?" Because we're nerds and like doing so. :)

Peace,

Mike

Looks like a 275M WW finish at best for Ghostbusters currently.

$250m maybe, unless it goes crazy in Japan.

It's opened in 84 territories is at $52.1m and made $10.7m this weekend.  So maybe $75-80m int'l from existing markets.  If it hits $130m domestic that $205-10m

I think the only markets left to open are Germany, France, Japan, Denmark, Belgium.

Weekend thoughts:

Certainly a very good opening for Bourne.

Nice start for Bad Moms. My audience last night went insane over it so I imagine word-of-mouth will be strong. Could see it leg its way to $80M ala The Other Woman.

Kinda rough drop for Star Trek. Another decent drop for Pets. Wish Ghostbusters was holding better.

Decent start for Nerve.

Solid expansion for Café Society.

Good limited beginnings for Indignation and Equity.

Well, Rth said that STB is making most of its money from IMAX theaters, it loses all those screens next weekend to Suicide Squad. I wouldn't count on a good hold for next weekend tbh.

I'm curious about the math. Right now GB is at $158 million world wide and from what I read has six markets remaining. So where is the almost $120 million coming from?

I'm giving it absolute best case scenario. Domestic legs it out to 135M i.e. follows The Heat from this point on (almost surely not going to happen, but let's give it the benefit of the doubt). It did 11M from existing markets this week, let's say it gets a further 1.5x from those markets to get to 16M and an OS take of 70M from those markets. The remaining big markets are Germany, Japan, Spain, France and a couple of other territories, I am being very very generous and saying it will get 50M from those territories due to a breakout in one or more of them (again, not very likely).

Just running the absolute best case numbers and coming up with 275M. Realistic scenario, 125-130M domestic, 60-64M from current markets, 30M from the remaining markets for 225-235M finish.

Too much controversy for almost no returns of significance.

A shame about Ghostbusters. One of the better movies this year.

In hindsight, I am sure the Sony execs are angry they ever courted the controversy head on and made it the cornerstone of their marketing campaign for the movie. It made the movie way too polarizing and toxic to discuss. They really expected the controversy to boost the box office a lot.
