Take Logan for example, it made 88M with around 25-30M from IMAX and LPF alone, that would be an additional 6-7M from 3D upcharges alone due to the 3-4$ extra per ticket.

 

And I believe Logan didn't have any 3D surcharges, so that is a perfect example of a recent movie that could have benefited. The 3D boost is still a real thing even if people are finally getting tired of it to the point you see more 2D shows offered than a few years ago.

 

Theater owners still want to get their money back on all that expensive 3D equipment James Cameron convinced them to pay for many years ago, so they still schedule 3D shows at the most popular moviegoing times and sort of force casual moviegoers into it. I'm just glad we now have more choices than we did around say 2010-2012.

Probably the biggest reason they are vary of new technologies like HFR etc. The theater owners don't want to be burned again due to audiences moving away. Also why theaters are taking the overall experience into with recliners, bars and food instead of changes to projection etc. Just bigger screens.

Disney has learned their "Ultron" lesson well: better to low-ball a massive estimate so you can then act like it showed "surprising strength" rather than go overboard and have the media call a $90m second weekend a "disappointing failure to meet expectations".
