The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Just to put this for later for my own internals...

My Cinemarks did make late changes Thursday morning for the whole weekend - they ended up 7 screening Spidey (30 shows each), and ended up removing showings left and right from holdovers not named Encanto or Ghostbusters...

So, in the end, they did go for only 1 screen less than the Endgame set...and where it needed to be to be $200M+...

Guess with Xmas, they didn't want to take chances til it was an absolute certainty...

MTC ratios do come down but this is too low. I am thinking there were shows beyond what you tracked. I could see almsot 11.3K shows including non reserved theaters.

Plus Regal had a big boost in show count and may be we are seeing ratio close to what was pre COVID.

Zack no. are correct. FRI was just 12% over THU.

We are closer to pre CoVID ratios, but still too far.

Because it was mentioned above and out of curiosity I looked at the presales for Scream a few minutes ago and at least for the previews on Thursday they are surprisingly good in my theaters:
It has for Thursday, Jan 13 253 sold tickets in 6 theaters

and for Friday, Jan 14 69 sold tickets also in 6 theaters.
Comps: The Forever Purge had on Thursday for Thursday (= 0 days to go) 241 sold tickets.
Halloween Kills had on Oct 5 (= 9 and 10 days to go) 315 and 353 sold tickets.

Oh I like the sound of this!

Ok this will be a SUPER IMPERFECT science but I remember doing Endgame's 2nd Friday at my theater and I'm curious how accurate it'll be so I thought I'd try to comp NWH 1st Saturday against it. My previews comp for NWH vs EG over indexed by 14.8% so I'll apply that here.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Current Number, 24 Screen Theater, 8PM - December 17, 2021

Counting for Saturday - December 18, 2021

45 show times, 2867 tickets sold

Comp to Endgame 2nd Friday

+132.5% before adjustment

$80,669,464

The Asgard's are saying Saturday will come in around $73M, so my comp didn't work too well! That's ok, because now I have Saturday's numbers to comp to Sunday. Maybe it adjusts down a bit because Sunday night should be weaker than Saturday night, but then again all the schools are out already and a lot of parents are starting their vacations Monday. Looking at the numbers, I don't see this dropping more than 15%.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Current Number, 24 Screen Theater, 8PM - December 18, 2021

Counting for Sunday - December 19, 2021

45 show times, 2556 tickets sold

Comp to NWH 1st Saturday (Assuming $73M)

-10.85% with no adjustment

$65.1M

Well that’s not great.

the GvK comp is same day of week too, though PWPs and capacity make it tricky. I am getting Eternals flashbacks from the reactions though.

@Krissykins I don't have any good comps for it this far out, so I can't do anything just yet. This may seem small, but horror movies generally start out low and don't really pick up until a few days before release. So in the end, things are too inconclusive at this stage of the game.
