The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

7 minutes ago, TalismanRing said:

I haven't seen any but Atom declared it better selling than A:IW -- it has a $4 ticket T-Mobile promotion.

Now will that promo bump previews and front load the w/e in a similar though lesser way than Suicide Squad

I have that promo but it can be used for the whole weekend (expires the 21st) If I remember correctly the one for SS was just for Friday which is why it had that massive Friday number and then dropped pretty hard Saturday. *But I'm not sure if folks are using it for Thursday only. Just pointing out that it can be used all weekend*

Something to note. Solo has been steadily in the top 5 on Fandango and MT the last couple days. I know it might not have the presales of a typical Star Wars film but I'm thinking it could surprise.

So, still way busy, but it's another tentpole weekend, so here's my 2nd local (Regal) - surprisingly the Cinemark is very slow this weekend to set, but here's how Regal sees it...

NEW

Deadpool 2 (3 - 15 showings) (this is less than every opening super set for the past 6-8 months - this is a supers selling, 12-45 aged male theater, so I'm surprised it didn't get the norm 4 screen set that each supers movie since at least Thor 3 has gotten)

Book Club (1 - 5 showings)

Show Dogs (1 - 5 showings)

Returning

Breaking In (1)

Life of the Party (1)

Overboard (1)

Avengers IW (2)

A Quiet Place (1 - this movie's continued popularity probably kept Deadpool from the 4th screen)

I Feel Pretty/Rampage (1 - each get 2 showings)

Gone

Everything else (I'd check, but you know:)...

So, Regal is no dummie...this morning, DP2 switched to 4 full screens or 20 showings for today (gotta check if they swapped Sat/Sun, too)...to accommodate the change, IFP/Rampage dropped to 1 showing each...AQP loses 2 showings...and a late night showing got added...

EDIT to ADD: Sat is at 17 showings, only taking the dropped IFP/Rampage showings so far...

Would a family type theatre underperform for a movie like deadpool...

My local theater is not very busy at all :(

Theaters in my area has Friday matinees look quite slow but night shows around 6-9pm looking great.

It’s definitely going up big time from 52M.

Saturday still hasn’t picked up much  since 2 days ago though.

72% of colleges let out today according to Deadline and that's a huge section of DP's audience.  So they should (I say should) know that when calculating night shows.  If it's that driven by the college age crowd then Sat not doing family business jumps makes sense. Last time DP had Valentine's Day and they were pushing it's romantic angle which probably helped Sat a bit as well as Sunday.  Also, it's a sequel so a  bit more front loading is to be expected.

Hmmm, not seeing Solo surprises me, even if it is Saturday...Show Dogs is only looking at mid single digits, so you'd think a Star Wars movie could be matching the presales of that a week out.

Just did a check for Solo for Thursday night at my theater. It has 3 2D showtimes and 2 3D showtimes

2D
7:00 PM 85/116
9:15 PM 88/142
10:45 PM 36/142

3D
7:00 PM 84/142
10:15 PM 30/116

Two things I noticed. My theater is not being bullish on this at all especially compared to other Star Wars films. Secondly it also has one less showtime than DP2 at this point in time which I'm actually surprised about but DP2 did get an additional three on Wednesday so I will check to see if my theater does the same for Solo.
*Also to note the Regal and United Artists that I did last minute tracking for DP2 isn't being bullish on this either with showtimes compared to other Star Wars films. I haven't done a seat count for it but I think I will as the date gets closer.

I think before I had it at $140M for the 3-day and like $170M for the 4-day but I think I'm going to lower those. I ignored the warning signs with DP2 leading up to release so I don't know if I want to make that same mistake again. I'm gonna go with $120M for the 3-day and $140M for the 4-day. If I see an uptick in sales I'll obviously change it.

Something I'm noticing with Solo...we may have a TLJ pt 2 situation where this movie just really struggles at the 10pm or later showings as it goes...maybe it's the age and period of life of the fan base, but I would not be surprised again if anything past the 10pm hour (except maybe on preview night and Friday) just sells like a mediocre opener...

Presales at my theaters mirror the ones above - very sold at the 7s/8s (through the weekend)...very unsold once 10pm happens...
