Besson on an interview says that he could have moved Valerian release date should Nolan released Inception 2 to avoid cannibalizing each other but seems Dunkirk is already cannibalizing it.

I feel kinda bad for him after he boasted about how everyone was gonna see Valerian this weekend and how he didn't understand why Dunkirk, a historical war movie, was being released in the summer. Not gonna be a good morning for him when he sees these numbers.

So Valerian is a "love it or hate it" kind of film.

Cause I've been seeing lots of raves but the ratings are usually middle of the road.

For me it was a "Love it AND hate it" film, which I think a lot of people are feeling too.

If we all felt the BO was $300-$400M once we saw the trailers...and it hits that number...it means it did exactly what we expected...it's not like 75 year old ladies who've never seen a super are gonna show for this one...supers has a "set" audiences that doesn't really expand/contract except in extreme circumstances (sucktacular movies and/or zeitgeist concepts)...

I mean, I thought it was a good movie from the trailers...so it being a good movie met my expectations when I made my box office estimates exactly...so if it was making $100M total, maybe I'd be saying "what the hell happened", but not when it will come between 10-20% of my guess...

Baywatch $58M when I guessed $200M - that was a "what the hell" happened movie...but that was critical reception and not-quite-as-good movie as trailers indicated with audiences who just didn't end up taking to the concept...

And yet Baywatch got over a 3X and SMH looks to get under a 2.5X. :)

SMH and Apes, both have hugely disappointing/unexplained collapse drop.....

Why are they suffered the same fate?

LOL that's not even a 45 degree slope .... that slope needs a little more angle.

BIG DROP INCOMING.......The Best Man Holiday got an A+ too from the same director.

Nov 15–17 2 $30,107,555 - 2,024 - $14,875 $30,107,555 1
Nov 22–24 3 $12,490,920 -58.5% 2,041 +17 $6,120 $50,360,510 2

Same producer for Think Like a Man.  Well received, or hyped films aimed at a black audience always fall pretty hard second weekend.  But I think this will fall more like TLAM...45-47%

Ok, I'll bite....forgive me SMH and Apes lovers....

SMH isn't nearly well liked by the general public as it is by a small amount of loonies....they changed too much in SMH and it doesn't feel like a Spidey movie....as for Apes, it's just too damn depressing and it's not a fun film to watch and they commit the cardinal sin...so wom is not good.

One person on Letterboxd and another on Awards Watch have said the film gets very brutal and borderline torture porn. The Detroit riots weren't sunshine, light, and joy, after all.

Obviously there is violence, but torture porn is an extreme reach. That is not even Kathryn Bigelow's modus operandi. I hear that the scenes are tantamount to the ones in Zero Dark Thirty. The characters not being terrorists and the context being way more pertinent to the USA probably has people feeling more perturbed about it. However, it is not a Nicolas Winding Refn or Tarantino violence fest. I am not into extreme violence, and I have been informed that it is in line with her other projects.

Just got out of Dunkirk:

  1. It's going to get all kinds of Oscar noms
  2. It was relentless
  3. It was soberingly impacting
  4. It is over-rated
  5. It will not have the legs of Interstellar

I agree very much with Jeremy Jahn's review, so I won't say much other than the fact that by the end I couldn't name a single character's name in this movie, and for me that means I wasn't seriously invested in it. It's a very well executed film, absolutely. I'm glad I saw it but I have no interest in seeing it again. The tension ratcheted up to 10 right from the get-go, and really didn't let off the gas for the rest of the movie, and I personally find that tiring.

I'm predicting most viewers will not want to see it more than once, and that's going to hurt it's legs. This is a better executed movie than Interstellar, but it's hard to empathize with characters outside of hoping that they survive. I found the timeline more confusing than it needed to be, particularly going back between night and day moments. At some point I wondered if Nolan was playing with some sort of time loop a la Inception or Interstellar, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't, but it felt that way to me.

I give it a B.
