Again, lack of empathy.  You're looking at the smaller picture here.  "oh he could've just moved the release date and prevented it!"  He had stated multiple times why he chose not to move it up.  He miscalculated Dunkirk's appeal and as such, for just a mistake, his film ended up doing poorly.  That still isn't enough of an excuse to be mercilessly laughing at the film's failure and acting like there isn't another human behind this project who probably feels terrible about how it did domestically.

There was never a good reason given for not moving apart from "We took the date first" when it was even moved in France to get away from the Dunkirk date. His ego pretty much doomed his movie, no sympathies from me at least for an easily preventable self inflicted disaster

Dunkirk is going to need a serious expansion during awards season (ie January) to have a chance at $200m. Right now seems headed for around $180-185m.

I find it hard to believe it's going to have that kind of staying power. 6 months later?

You think they'll hold off on the video release?

No because Nolan hates doing award screeners. He would rather those people watch it on the proper Blu-ray and at least attempt to prevent the kind of piracy we see on so many award season movies while they are still in theaters.

Meanwhile, Dark Tower collapse on MovieTickets continues. Last night it was 15.2%, now it's 12.8%. Dunkirk was 13.5% last night and now 15%. Pretty much exact same thing happened last week with Dunkirk and Emoji. We know how that one turned out for the Saturday/Sunday grosses.

But Dark Tower is starting with a bigger Friday advantage over Dunkirk than Emoji had last week. I think it's gonna be pretty close between these two, probably within $500,000 for the weekend. Both probably land between $17m and $18m.

A great article about people forgetting crimes of celebrities.

The age of consent in France is 15, as specified by Article 227-25 of the Penal Code, which reads: "The fact of the commission without violence, constraint, threat or surprise of a sexual offence by an adult on the person of a minor under fifteen years of age is punished by five years' imprisonment and a fine of €75,000."

Yikes.  But hey, I guess in BOT world, every single human that works at studios must get everything right and must do everything how they see fit.  They can never make mistakes or else you can't empathize with them when their film flops.  Completely forgot about that rule

The studios wanted to move it, Besson didn't. This is 100% on Besson

Maybe it is on him, but all he did was miscalculate the appeal of Dunkirk and you're acting like for that one mistake, there should be no empathy whatsoever directed towards him

He didn't just miscalculate Dunkirk's appeal. He also ignored the releases of Spidey and Apes which were always going to give Valerian (and Dunkirk) trouble on July 21st. August always made a lot more sense for Valerian and it's too bad he didn't want to change it.
