Top 25 films of 1997 (Countdown will begin Sunday Nov. 26th at Noon EST 9AM PST)

Recommended Posts

I see how if Princess Mononoke is to count for 1997, then so would Life is Beautiful.  I have a feeling though that Life as Beautiful is going to suffer in the rankings though since it is associate with the 1999 Academy Awards.

I have been looking at alot of different movies, and I truely feel Hard Eight should count towards 1997, and Cube should count towards 1998.

Here are the IMDB release dates for the following.

Hard Eight

USA 20 January 1996 (Sundance Film Festival)
France 18 May 1996 (Cannes Film Festival)
France September 1996 (Deauville Film Festival)
USA 28 February 1997

Cube

Canada9 September 1997(Toronto International Film Festival)

Greece12 September 1997(Athens Film Festival)

Canada18 September 1997(Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival)

USA16 January 1998(Sundance Film Festival)

Germany19 February 1998(Berlin International Film Festival)

Netherlands11 July 1998

UK17 August 1998(Edinburgh International Film Festival)

USA11 September 1998(limited)

The Butcher Boy

Ireland 13 July 1997 (Galway Film Fleadh)
Germany 14 February 1998 (Berlin International Film Festival)
UK 20 February 1998
Ireland 20 February 1998
Germany 26 February 1998
USA 3 April 1998 (limited)

Now, take a look at three movies that opened in 2017 but qualified for the 2016 Academy Awards.

The Founder

Australia   24 November 2016

USA   7 December 2016(Arclight Hollywood)

USA     19 January 2017(limited)

Gold

Croatia29 December 2016

USA30 December 2016(limited)

USA27 January 2017

The Comedian

USA 11 November 2016 (AFI Fest)
USA 9 December 2016 (limited)
USA 15 January 2017 (Palm Springs International Film Festival)
Canada 3 February 2017 (limited)
USA 3 February 2017

and from the previous year

Labor Day

USA 27 December 2013 (Los Angeles, California)
Kuwait 30 January 2014
Sweden 30 January 2014 (Göteborg International Film Festival)
Canada 31 January 2014

USA 31 January 2014

Now, look at Princess Mononoke and Life as Beautiful to see what justifies their 1997 places. (= a real release in any country)

Princess Mononoke

Japan 12 July 1997
Portugal 26 July 1997
Taiwan 2 August 1997
Hong Kong 14 August 1997
Germany 12 February 1998 (Berlin International Film Festival)
Canada 18 September 1999 (Toronto International Film Festival)
USA 26 September 1999 (New York Film Festival)

Life is Beautiful

Italy 20 December 1997
France May 1998 (Cannes Film Festival)
Canada 3 September 1998 (Montréal Film Festival)
Greece 9 September 1998 (Athens Film Festival)
Canada 12 September 1998 (Toronto International Film Festival)
Canada 25 September 1998 (Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival)
Belgium 14 October 1998
Switzerland 16 October 1998 (German speaking region)
France 21 October 1998
USA 22 October 1998 (AFI Film Festival)
USA 23 October 1998 (limited)

I feel like this makes sense

Now look at Split

Split

USA26 September 2016(Fantastic Fest)

USA15 November 2016(AFI Fest)

USA20 January 2017

See how Split is a 2017 film, yet was shown during 2016.  The same thing should happen for Butcher Boy and Cube going to 1998, and Hard Eight going to 1997.  Comedian, Gold, Founder, and Labor Day all show example of not only film festivals, but actual release dates.  For Butcher Boy, Cube, and Hard Eight you only get film festivals just like Split.  In regards to Life as Beautiful and Princess Mononoke, they opened in a country in 1997.  You can decide foreign because as far as I know, these rules make Underworld: Blood Wars a 2016 film since that opened in alot of countries in 2016.

New batch of bad takes

The Ice Storm: I like Ang Lee and I like this kind of film, so I’m not sure why I’m so indifferent to it. 6/10

Sweet Hereafter is a collection of spectacular moments that don’t quite come together very well. I’m definitely not enamored with the whole as I’m with its individual parts. It feels pretty unique, though. 8/10

Absolute Power: Starts pretty well, but then Eastwood decides he wants to take down the president and the movies takes a massive, MASSIVE nosedive. 5/10

If you want to do it the way the Academy does it, a movies needs to be released to the paying public outside of a film festival. In terms of all those 2016 films, they had exactly that -- they weren't 2017 releases (though they went wide in 2017).

Obviously the situation gets more complicated for older movies, especially foreign films that often have wildly-varying release dates around the world.

I don't have an easy answer.

UK 15 December 1997 (premiere)
Spain 17 December 1997
Netherlands 18 December 1997

WHat about something like Spice World where it is released international first.  Or most recently, Underworld: Blood Wars released mostly around the world before January.

I recommend the director's cut of Mimic.  You can order it for 3 bucks on vudu.  It is top 25 worthy.  It only adds about 6 minutes more and that six minutes goes towards minor character development, but it makes the movie feel more serious.

Also, I am having the hardest time finding Spawn (director's cut) for rent.  Everywhere wants me to buy the whole thing.  Ahh!!  and Princess Mononoke is nowhere to rent.
