Not the filmmakers themselves, though. And I venture to say even a large number of the execs.

I find it hard to believe that every single filmmaker fancies themselves as the next Spielberg when they set out. Seems much less far-fetched to think that some of them are mostly doing it to earn some cash and just hoping people will like it as a bonus.

It's way too hard of a business to go in with that attitude, though. It's a miserable way to make a living unless you're invested in what you're making. It doesn't mean you want or expect to be the next Spielberg, it means trying to make the best movie you can.

I think of Friedberg/Seltzer, Uwe Boll, and pretty much everyone involved in Happy/Madison and I just can't see it

The people who make unfunny movies think they're making funny movies. It's almost incomprehensibly hard to get a movie financed. If someone just wanted to make money, there's way easier professions.

In the case of Happy Madison, Adam Sandler is reportedly an extremely nice guy; if accurate, that probably makes working with him worth the inevitable bad reviews - especially in the years when his name was basically a guaranteed #1 opening and $100+ million domestic total.

The Looming Tower is so great. That and Atlanta are the best on TV right now. So much better than the boring second season of American Crime Story. And way better than Waco, another 90s true story on TV. If the guys who did Waco did the Looming Tower, Bin Laden probably would have been played by Bradley Cooper or some shit.

watched the first episode of Ugly Delicious. it was good. folks trying pizza from all over the world. surprised to see Finland wasn't featured anywhere but i guess their pizza only covers half the title.

There's an episode on Vietnamese Cajun I'm really looking to watch, since he goes to Houston and a popular crawfish restaurant my family really enjoys

I think this season of ACS is a slight step down.  But it has a compelling lead performance at its core

The Versace section has turned out to be arguably the weakest part of the show, which is ironic of course given the title (even though Edgar Ramirez and especially Penelope Cruz have been giving strong work). That opening scene with him as a kid in the latest episode, yikes (especially with how everyone was speaking entirely in English in 1957 Italy). It feels like they're really trying to draw parallels between Versace and Cunanan and I don't think it has worked.

Agreed about Darren Criss, though. Never would've guessed that he could be so scary from those years on Glee.
