TSOW winning PGA means nothing. The voting is closed. No wonder Francis could afford to say stuff like give the award to Sheesha or Margot cause that makes no difference. The winners are known: BP = #MeToo BD = GdT hopefully and not a McDonagh upset Script = #MeToo (you'll know #MeToo is winning the whole she-bang when it wins Script cause all recent winners had Script+BP combo) BA = Francis BA = Oldman BSA = Rockwell BSA = Janney There will be no upsets. This is their political BP of the season and they'll back it up all the way. really ? you have no problem with hurt locker, kings speech , the artist , argo and moonlight ? THIS is the worst that can happen ? because it is not genre or popular with the GA ? calm down , 3B and TSOW are actually the best of the year , one of those 2 winning is the best case considering how this year is all about overrated popular movies

Not by much, though. lets not pretend that 3B would have gone this far w/o MeToo. It's benefiting because they are attracted to the witch-hunt aspect of the movie much more than the women equality/rights (since the movie has zero of it - Francis is the worst mother ever whose now deceased daughter wanted to live with her horrid dad cause he was shockingly less horrible?). if they cared for women, they would have jumped on Lady Bird wagon since awarding a female director would be seen as progressive/equality/rights/etc. Also, for what it's worth, LB is the best reviewed movie of the year so it would be awarding the best. rukaio101
...You know, I think there are a lot of legitimate reasons for people to be unhappy about 3B winning Best Picture. 'It's related to the #MeToo movement' sure as hell ain't one of those reasons.

Hollywood thinks that it has something important to say re: MeToo and it really doesn't, except from Hollywood's most shallow perspective cause the female character takes on a bunch of men over an unresolved sex crime+murder. Soon after the win when MeToo is yesterday news, they'll be like WTF were we thinking?

Three Billboards is gonna have minimal (hell, none) effect on the movement.

Go away in the sense that it's not gonna be relevant for wins after this win. next year, something else will be driving the narrative cause that's how every season works. They always need something new so that they can make new speeches. I honestly don't know why everyone here is acting like 3B isn't profiting from MeToo. Everyone on Awards Watch sees it, why can't you? AMPAS always awards what they think represents the political movement of the season best. They think that's 3B not Lady Bird (female director and all that). Edited January 22, 2018 by Valonqar

Everyone on Awards Watch sees it, why can't you? AMPAS always awards what they think represents the political movement of the season best. They think that's 3B not Lady Bird (female director and all that). Because literally most of the big Oscar frontrunners at the moment are movies that star women and/or deal with gender issues? Shape of Water, Lady Bird, The Post, 3 Billboards, maybe I, Tonya, the list ain't exactly short. And 3 Billboards doesn't really have anything extra that particularly ties it to MeToo compared to those other movies. Especially since the movie isn't exactly glorifying its main female protagonist. Also, even if theoretically it was super duper linked to the MeToo movement, honestly, who gives a shit? Movies are linked to real-life events and political movements all the time. Events in real life do have an effect on how people view and rate movies and that's not really something you can avoid. And if the narrative or thematics in a movie reflect current or personal events, said movie is more likely to resonate with the people watching it. Hence why timely films tend to do well in awards shows. Doesn't suddenly make it unfair when they win prizes because of it, nor does it make a person's opinion lesser for liking it. You don't like 3B? That's fine. Like I said, I think there are plenty of legitimate issues with 3B that would make it a problematic BP winner. But claiming it's only being considered because of MeToo and 'political causes' and yadada is just kinda dumb.
aabattery
Three Billboards has been a BP contender for ages. I don't like the movie but acting like #MeToo is the only reason it's become the frontrunner is dumb. Lots of people legitimately have a lot of love for the film.
CoolioD1
yeah people have been calling 3billboards for best picture since it won the people's choice at TIFF in sept weeks before even the harvey weinstein stuff got out. thanks but no thanks to that hypothesis.

Nobody would have cared about a new martin mcdonagh movie ? It was already a frontrunner before october. the Guard and more so In Bruges fanbase grew over time and the fact McDonagh was nominated for a movie like In Bruges do show he is getting attention by the industry and would have for any new movie. He is an oscar winner with an impressive track record. The writing of 3Billboard is undeniably elegant and brilliant imo. 6 minutes ago, CoolioD1 said: best picture since it won the people's choice at TIFF in sept weeks before even the harvey weinstein stuff got out. Valonqar
Fair enough, it was the front-runner since TIFF. You are right. Never heard of McDonagh so I didn't know his movie would be automatically on the radar. My bad.
