Hello, My Name Is Doris (2016)
Roadside Attractions

$14.4M

83% RT

The Meddler (2016)

Sony Pictures Classics

$4.2M

85% RT

This is an example of SPC's ineptitude.  Equally commercial movies targeting the same audience with similar critical reaction.

Heh. I watched (and loved Doris) but I have no idea what the other one is.

How Crouching Tiger grossed over $128M is something that has forever confused and baffled me.

It became a zeitgeist movie for some reason. Might have been the stunts mainly leading to that. The movie also led to roles in Hollywood for Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi.

Pretty good opening for Padmavat. The movie has been through hell just to see release but it all worked out in the end for the makers with huge openings in India and the US.

Looks like final grosses for the Best Picture nominees still in theaters will be $85M for The Post, $60M for The Shape of Water, $53M for Darkest Hour, $50M Three Billboards, $47M for Lady Bird, $18M for Phantom Thread, and $15M for Call Me by Your Name. Not a bad sum altogether, even if the biggest hits of all the nominated films are out of theaters.

Nooooo @ Phantom Thread decreasing. Still a strong enough PTA for an expansion next week (hopefully)

After seeing the movie: yeah, Best Picture nod or not, this was never gonna connect with the masses. But it seems fitting that by far the two lowest-grossing BP nominees this year are two vastly different films about love.

Somehow I was disappointed, with two biggest grosser have gone out of theater, and the post didn't turn crazy like la la land, hidden figures, revenant, or american sniper, I expect a much bigger space for the remaining nominees, but still, except for 3 billboard, the others seem to be remained as typical indie hit

With the exception of Proud Mary, I think every 2018 film so far can be considered a win or at least profitable.  Although Sony probably made back their losses on Proud Mary from Jumanji’s grosses from this weekend alone.  only one that can be argued for is Paddington 2 but that’s a hit overseas so who needs America

None of these movies were ever gonna become the next La La Land or The Revenant, especially The Post with how much of a non-factor it ended up being in the awards race.
