Biggest Box Office Disappointments of the Decade

Recommended Posts

Not sure if a thread about this has already been made before. But anyway, my list includes:

1. Justice League

2. Han Solo

3. Alice Through The Looking Glass

4.  Power Rangers

5. Blade Runner 2049

EDIT: I'm talking about large scale of disappointment here e.g.

Expectations were too high but under-performed

Strong franchise

Strong BO performance of predecessor

Nostalgia

Ignoring hit/flop/break-even...just 10 huge disappointments off the top of my head:

  1. Alice2 (1b+ ww to 300 ww. Even bigger drop dom %-wise)
  2. Lone Ranger (Bruckheimer, Verbiniski, Depp, Disney after POTC4's 1b+)
  3. Solo (ww could have been dom)
  4. Lego2 (good that dom > prod budget, dom > os but still a shocker franchise ender)
  5. TF5 (ww could have been os. what a drop from TF4 ww. Jaw dropping low dom.)
  6. The Good Dinosaur (ww should have been os. first Pixar looser)
  7. Valerian (ww should have been os)
  8. ASM2 (franchise ender, came close to under-200 dom club by @baumer)
  9. MPR (ww could have been dom)
  10. MJ2 (franchise went from Catching Fire's growth over THG to MJ1/MJ2's decline)

  5. TGD (ww should have been os)
  6. Valerian (ww should have been os)
  7. ME (knew it would flop but 18 dom and 83 ww...smh)
  8. Ben-Hur (par with ME. Dom was terrible and so was os)
  9. JL (DCEU's team-up below MOS ww years back)
  10. ASM2 (franchise ender, came close to under-200 dom club by @baumer)

Harsh to mention these but bothered me much so will let it out:

  1. Neighbors2 (1/3rd Neighbors1 dom and ww. Didn't see it coming from a mile.)
  2. MPR (ww could have been dom)
  3. FB2 (650+ ww close to FB1's 580 os. Big drop dom, franchise shaker.)

Sorry, what is ME and TGD?

I would have to add Passengers as well. Hottest movie stars at that time, big budget production, interesting premise.

Mortal Engines and The Good Dinosaur :)

Passengers disappointed too but my expectations weren't very high. Legged it well. Wasn't expecting north of 150-175 dom and it managed 100 (fudge included). OS was similarly disappointing but fair.

Besides Peter Jackson, the movie is doomed to fail.

The Good Dinosaur (as I remember it) wasn't marketed that well unlike other releases.

As for my picks of movies that didn’t hit the potential box office expectations, i got some. Not necessarily the biggest disappointments but rather a list of underperformers compared to big expectations:

Very good & well-received movies but not huge box office performers.

Kung Fu Panda 3

War for the Planet of the Apes

Paddington 2

KFP3 OS-China was huge downer compared to 1st 2 movies.

KFP1 416.3-26.0 = 390.3

KFP2 500.4-92.2 = 408.2

KFP3 377.6-154.3 = 223.3

Probably has to do that I didn't know that the third had come out until I joined this forum (And honestly, this applies basically to almost all DreamWorks in the last decade)

I actually forgot that thing exists.

At the dawn of the nostalgia rise and immediately following the releases of Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it should’ve done way more than it did, even if the film sucked ass. I guess Will Smith really was that important for the brand.

After CF most of thought MJ1 would easily cross 350 and no one thought the last movie of franchise would do well under 300. Movies made big profits but MJ2 dom was 66% of CF. OS didn't grow for the finale too giving it the smallest WW of the four.
