Xillix
September 2-5 (4-day Labor Day weekend) Turbulence Endures Rocky Labor Day Opening Dwayne Johnson's latest action flick fell short of tracking with a $25.6 million 3-day. This was a bad movie at a slow time of year which was simply trading on its star's marquee power, and clearly some of his fans saw through this and decided to wait for a rental. The Girlfriend Hoax entered the top ten as it expanded into 109 theaters. The Feminist opened in four theaters with a $15,604 PTA, which is not the most encouraging number in the world for the faith-based period piece. 1. Turbulence - $25,638,889 (3-day) / $31,612,750 (4-day) 2. Hired Guns - $12,213,343 (-26.8%) 3. De Blob - $4,970,165 (-11.1%) 4. Broadway Selects: Network - $4,433,330 (3-day) / $5,652,496 (4-day) (-25.7%) 5. The Ancient Magus' Bride & the King of Cats - $3,179,395 (-36.8%) 6. Borrasca - $3,158,543 (-26.8%) 7. Wolves - $2,857,731 (-20.3%) 8. Tommy - $2,365,628 (-29.8%) 9. Schadenfreude - $2,232,364 (-30.4%) 10. The Girlfriend Hoax - $1,063,840 (+105.2%)-. The Feminist - $62,416 September 9-11 Live2ream Broadcasts to Underwhelming Viewership Tracking suggested the thriller Live2ream might be able to cash in on a cult following to open with a big increase, but that didn't pan out this weekend. Instead the gimmicky potboiler opened very similarly to its predecessor, barely snagging first place from Turbulence with $10.7 million. Elsewhere on the chart, The Girlfriend Hoax and The Feminist both continued their gradual expansions. 1. Live2ream - $10,661,003 2. Turbulence - $10,640,139 (-58.5%) 3. Hired Guns - $6,021,178 (-50.7%) 4. De Blob - $2,216,694 (-55.4%) 5. Broadway Selects: Network - $2,203,365 (-50.3%) 6. Borrasca - $1,841,431 (-41.7%) 7. The Girlfriend Hoax - $1,366,060 (+28.4%) 8. The Ancient Magus' Bride & the King of Cats - $1,170,017 (-63.2%) 9. Wolves - $1,148,808 (-59.8%) 10. Tommy - $1,104,748 (-53.3%) -. The Feminist - $135,450 September 16-18 Last Policeman Doesn't Doom the Box Office The Last Policeman opened on the low end of tracking at $26.6 million. The well-reviewed mystery-thriller has Oscar buzz, but isn't flashy blockbuster material - despite the backstory, we're not looking at Armageddon here, but something more akin to September 2013's Prisoners. Seasonal family film All-Nighter performed as expected with $10.9 million but faces direct competition for families next weekend. The Girlfriend Hoax finally entered wide release and made it into the top five. 1. The Last Policeman - $26,551,736 2. All-Nighter - $10,873,136 3. Live2ream - $5,191,908 (-51.3%) 4. Turbulence - $4,947,665 (-53.5%) 5. The Girlfriend Hoax - $3,831,834 (+180.5%) 6. Hired Guns - $3,263,479 (-45.8%) 7. De Blob - $1,487,401 (-32.9%) 8. Broadway Selects: Network - $1,218,461 (-44.7%) 9. Borrasca - $1,064,347 (-42.2%) 10. The Feminist - $1,051,050 (+676%) September 23-25 Baseball Boy Hits a Double, Not a Home Run As expected, Baseball Boy: The Base Thief managed to outperform its predecessor on opening weekend, though the $17.7 million debut is a bit short of tracking, which had it closer to $20 million. It was still good for first place for the weekend. The Feminist entered wide release with an underwhelming $1.6 million - it goes into saturation bookings next weekend, but at this point, that hardly seems justified. Perhaps a Mother's Day wide opening with a targeted church-group marketing push could have made this some money. 1. Baseball Boy: The Base Thief - $17,734,389 2. The Last Policeman - $14,231,730 (-46.4%) 3. All-Nighter - $6,480,389 (-40.4%) 4. The Girlfriend Hoax - $3,153,229 (-17.7%) 5. Live2ream - $2,762,095 (-46.8%) 6. Turbulence - $2,340,245 (-52.7%) 7. Hired Guns - $1,785,123 (-45.3%) 8. The Feminist - $1,594,600 (+51.7%) 9. De Blob - $876,079 (-41.1%) 10. Borrasca - $641,801 (-39.7%)September 30 - October 2 Pirates Raid the Box Office Action-thriller The Horn met modest expectations with its $22.1 million opening, good for a clear first-place finish on a quiet early autumn weekend. The Feminist's final expansion nudged it up into the top five, but the $2.5 million it made is nothing to cheer about for the $30 million production, which, like most Christian films, is extremely unlikely to make it up overseas. 1. The Horn - $22,063,707 2. Baseball Boy: The Base Thief - $10,427,821 (-41.2%) 3. The Last Policeman - $7,713,598 (-45.8%) 4. All-Nighter - $4,024,322 (-37.9%) 5. The Feminist - $2,525,250 (+58.4%) 6. Xillix
October 7-9 Gulch Spooks Some Life into Fall Box Office Though it came in slightly under projections, the western-horror-adventure Shiverin' Gulch netted a $47.5 million opening, very respectable given its odd premise and blend of genres. Solid reviews helped for sure, despite some criticisms of the film's depiction of native folklore. Evidently the general audience wasn't bothered by such reservations. 1. Shiverin' Gulch - $47,545,416 2. The Horn - $11,671,701 (-47.1%) 3. Baseball Boy: The Base Thief - $6,371,398 (-38.9%) 4. The Last Policeman - $4,767,004 (-38.2%) 5. Turbulence - $416,273 (-51.4%)October 14-16 Pair of Quirky New Releases Can't Take the Top Slot Sci-fi comedy Day of the Tentacle and surrealistic biopic The Trapped Keeper both performed within expectations, winding up in a close race for second ultimately won by Tentacle. Thanks to iffy reviews for the Evan Goldberg feature, the pair are likely to switch places next week. Neither was a match for Shiverin' Gulch, which posted a pretty strong hold in its second weekend that suggests it is in fact playing at least somewhat to families, as the distributor intended. 1. Shiverin' Gulch - $26,197,524 (-44.9%)2. Day of the Tentacle - $16,665,821 3. The Trapped Keeper - $15,982,626 4. The Horn - $6,337,734 (-45.7%) 5. The Feminist - $479,305 (-61.5%) 10. Live2ream - $412,586 (-46.8%)October 21-23 Thirsty Takes a Big Gulp Comedy Thirsty over-performed with a $26.4 million opening as the only new wide release of the weekend. Strong reviews and the general indifference towards Day of the Tentacle certainly helped it out. Shiverin' Gulch posted another solid hold, but it wasn't as good as The Trapped Keeper, which is generating some Oscar buzz. 1. Thirsty - $26,435,909 2. Shiverin' Gulch - $15,430,342 (-41.1%) 3. The Trapped Keeper - $9,637,523 (-39.7%) 4. Day of the Tentacle - $8,149,586 (-51.1%) 5. The Horn - $3,409,701 (-46.2%) 6. Baseball Boy: The Base Thief - $2,366,898 (-38.9%) 7. Live2ream - $217,433 (-47.3%) October 28-30 Pair of Halloween Releases Cannibalize One Another Voicemail and Fiesta Loca both under-performed to varying degrees this weekend. Even though one is a supernatural horror film and the other is a fantasy-comedy, the two were fairly direct competitors for holiday moviegoers and Hispanic viewers, which are one of the biggest audiences for ghostly fright flicks. Voicemail wound up on the lower end of its tracking with $35.5 million, while Fiesta Loca fell short of tracking at $32.9 million. Blame that on the inconsistent tone that the marketing couldn't hide - it wasn't clear what age group was being targeted here - and competition from the still-strong Shiverin' Gulch, which serves as a similar seasonally-appropriate adventure. 1. Voicemail - $35,542,128 2. Fiesta Loca - $32,862,190 3. Thirsty - $15,147,776 (-42.7%) 4. Shiverin' Gulch - $8,316,954 (-46.1%) 5. The Trapped Keeper - $6,486,053 (-32.7%) 6. Xillix
November 4-6 Off-Road Stays in Gear, Spring Is Still a Bit Sleepy Ludicrous action flick Off-Road opened on target with $48.6 million for the weekend, right where projections had it. On the other hand, period musical Spring Awakening fell under tracking with $14.1 million, playing to a pretty niche audience and mediocre reviews - something that hurts this kind of movie a lot more than Off-Road. Fiesta Loca fell a steep 62.2% from opening weekend, which can be attributed to an inflated first weekend gross thanks to its Dia de los Muertos holiday tie-in. In 5 theaters, Paradise Island opened with an encouraging $69,920 average. 1. Off-Road - $48,611,943 2. Voicemail - $22,213,830 (-37.5%) 3. Spring Awakening - $14,128,465 4. Paradise Island - $349,600 November 11-13 Aeroplane Propeller Stalls Out Both of the weekend's new releases - the poorly-reviewed sci-fi Understand and the controversial true-story film In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - opened a bit below tracking. Projections foresaw a very tight race between the two, but ultimately the gulf wound up wider than expected with Understand taking the lead - though it was still only third place for the weekend. Evidently audiences are a bit more willing to shell out for a been-there-done-that genre flick than an odd and potentially offensive flick like Aeroplane. Paradise Island fell just outside of the top ten in its first expansion to just 48 theaters. 1. Off-Road - $22,701,777 (-53.3%) 2. Voicemail - $12,639,669 (-43.1%)3. Understand - $10,953,958 4. The Trapped Keeper - $2,861,232 (-36.8%) 10. Day of the Tentacle - $1,336,155 (-48.6%) -. Paradise Island - $1,333,344 (+281.4%) November 18-20 Verbinski Drops Another Bomb on Pre-Thanksgiving Weekend Following the high-profile disappointment of The Lone Ranger back in 2013, Gore Verbinski has another big flop on his hands this weekend with XJ-9: Rebirth. Like with his prior misfire, the trouble here seems to be choice of source material; this was a cartoon with a pretty short run and without a large, rabidly nostalgic fanbase. What's worse, unlike other recent cartoon adaptations from often less-than-prime material, Rebirth was positioned as a sequel to the cartoon rather than an adaptation. Even with some concessions made to introduce newcomers, such as a large time-skip, the prospect just wasn't enticing for most moviegoers, the majority of whom had probably never seen the TV show. With a $170 million production cost, this one's unlikely to see black ink even with overseas grosses. Tyler Perry's latest film performed as expected, while Paradise Island continued to expand and made it into the top ten. 1. XJ-9: Rebirth - $34,686,999 2. One Big Family - $21,384,248 3. Paradise Island - $2,243,340 (+68.2%) November 23-27 (5-Day Thanksgiving Weekend) Audiences Not Too Hungry for Duck Duck Hunt opened a bit under expectations with a still-decent $34.3 million 3-day over Thanksgiving weekend. The brand didn't mean much of anything to anyone but retro gamers, and reviews weren't strong enough to drive a big turnout. Unfortunately for the animated film, it faces direct competition before Christmas from the highly-anticipated Gateways. Paradise Island went wide and cracked the top five. 1. Duck Hunt - $34,260,264 (3-day) / $48,820,876 (5-day) 2. XJ-9: Rebirth - $14,256,357 (3-day) / $20,272,540 (5-day) (-58.9%) 3. One Big Family - $9,986,444 (3-day) / $13,301,943 (5-day) (-53.3%) 4. Xillix
December 2-4 Hell Jingles Almost All the Way Horror-comedy Jingle Hell opened a touch under tracking, perhaps being a bit too grotesque for some audiences. Its $19.4 million start is still solid for the genre and the quiet first weekend of December. 1. Jingle Hell - $19,420,392 2. Duck Hunt - $15,348,598 (-55.2%) 3. XJ-9 Rebirth - $6,187,259 (-56.6%) 4. Spring Awakening - $1,265,402 (-41.1%)December 9-11 Two Action Tentpoles Duel to the (Mutual) Death Opening in fairly direct competition were the anime adaptation Bleach and the sci-fi sequel LucIId. There was some debate over which would lead the weekend, and in the end, it was a photo-finish. Bleach ultimately came out on top, but didn't emerge unscathed. While LucIId was sunk by bad reviews and awful word-of-mouth that saw it decline quite harshly from Friday thru Sunday, Bleach was handicapped by its source material - not especially well-known to a general American audience - and its odd structure. But those were nothing compared to the unfortunate timing of the release; had Bleach not opened against LucIId, it probably could have gone much higher given the underwhelming holiday slate so far. It definitely looks set to hold better than its foe in the coming weeks, but we're hearing word-of-mouth is mixed on this one too, and these types of films often have inflated openings from the fanboy audience. 1. Bleach - $31,986,561 2. LucIId - $31,057,847 3. Duck Hunt - $10,575,184 (-41.1%) 4. Jingle Hell - $9,826,718 (-49.4%) 5. Paradise Island - $4,690,176 (+15.8%) 6. Off-Road - $2,680,494 (-45.6%) 7. The Most Wanted Man in Great Britain proved to be very solid counter-programming, also over-performing with $36.1 million. The historical chase-drama had older audiences locked up throughout the weekend and also enjoys fantastic reception. As expected, LucIId tumbled badly in its second outing, while Bleach had a much better hold considering the new openers and its subgenre. 1. Gateways - $83,031,818 2. The Most Wanted Man in Great Britain - $36,059,531 3. Bleach - $15,097,657 (-52.8%) 4. LucIId - $10,311,205 (-66.8%) 5. Duck Hunt - $5,033,788 (-52.4%) 6. Paradise Island - $4,917,996 (+4.9%) 7. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - $746,063 (-49.7%)December 23-25 (Christmas Weekend) Christmas Newcomers Can't Outshine Holdovers Gateways and The Most Wanted Man in Great Britain held firm in the top two spots over the holiday weekend. Meanwhile, the new releases all opened around the low ends of their tracking, with sci-fi comedy Guardians of the Internet at $17.4 million, horror film Thawed at $8.8 million, and Christian sci-fi The Neon Psalms earning $5.6 million from its Christmas Day release on Sunday. In holdover news, the only remarkable performance was LucIId's continuing rapid demise. 1. Gateways - $56,129,509 (-32.4%) 2. The Most Wanted Man in Great Britain - $26,034,981 (-27.8%)3. Guardians of the Internet - $17,368,335 4. Bleach - $10,658,946 (-29.4%)5. Thawed - $8,799,408 6. The Neon Psalms - $5,647,188 (Sunday only) 7. LucIId - $4,918,445 (-52.3%) 8. Duck Hunt - $4,419,666 (-12.2%) 9. Paradise Island - $3,255,713 (-33.8%) 10. Jingle Hell - $2,611,627 (-44.4%) December 30 - January 1 Top Three Repeat Over New Year's Gateways, The Most Wanted Man in Great Britain, and Guardians of the Internet all held onto their top three spots, the two features in their third weekends both seeing increases.
