Here’s the first look at Oscar Isaac in Paul Schrader’s upcoming pic The Card Counter, in which he plays William Tell, a former serviceman who lives a spartan existence playing cards before he moves into the world of high-stakes poker.

 

As Deadline first revealed, the movie has been on production hiatus since March after a cast member tested positive for COVID-19 five days out from the end of shoot.

 

However, I can now exclusively reveal that cameras are set to get rolling again in Mississippi from early July after a week of prep, with SAG and the local authorities having cleared it to resume. The production will be implementing coronavirus preventative measures to keep cast and crew safe on set, and both the larger crowd scenes and scenes involving intimacy between actors are already in the can so the hope is it will be smooth sailing to completion.

 

The Card Counter also stars Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe. Schrader wrote the script and is directing. Braxton Pope, Lauren Mann and David Wulf are producing, with William Olsson and Martin Scorsese as executive producers. HanWay Films is handling international sales with David Gonzales of Northside Services and Endeavor Content overseeing the U.S. sale.

This could be an exciting film and First Reformed was excellent so I'm interested to see what comes of this.

The acting from everyone but Isaac looks really weak, and even Isaac looks better in Dune than he does here. I'm also not in love with the dialogue, and the black and white shots.

This looks more like The Canyons Shrader than Mishima/First Reformed Shrader

Looks like a return to his slick crime/crime-adjacent dramas with a coat of existentialism like American Gigolo, Light Sleeper and The Walker which I guess was predictable, he wasn't gonna do another First Reformed. Those movies are a mixed bag at best, hopefully this is better than at least some of them. I wonder what would have happened if he'd gotten to make Nine Men from Now instead of this.

Saw the trailer for this in the cinemas before Stillwater. Worked a lot more for me this time. Actually vibing a lot more with how sleazy and cheap the whole thing feels.

Card Counter premieres at Venice tomorrow with The Power of the Dog and Hand of God which came to the festival with considerably more buzz.  So it might get a little bit lost in the shuffle unless one or both of these favorites underperforms and it overperforms. Just saying that I expect the main portion of reactions to be about the Cumberbatch movie which is super hotly anticipated, second only to Dune (Friday).
