To use Fallen Kingdom as a baseline: was there another wildly popular/highly-regarded movie out at the time that was doing big box office? I genuinely can't remember. 

 

Anyway, theatres in my area are looking pretty empty (outside of the earliest premium screenings) so far for Dominion, but I didn't check before Fallen Kingdom, so I don't have a great point of comparison.

 

Incredibles 2 opened the week before it to 180M and still did an 80M 2nd weekend on the OW of Fallen Kingdom.

Looked at the bigger theater, it's only looking slightly better thanks to the Dolby screenings. That one might be a bigger deal honestly.

Looking at the seat counts for my theater on Friday, TG still has a sizable advantage over Jurassic, 920 to 635. I can't imagine a JW film has ever opened behind another film in terms of capacity but that probably says more about TG's extraordinary reception than it does the dinosaurs.

FYI for those who think Elvis can beat Lightyear, it has sold < 1/2 of tickets that Lightyear sold in 1 day at MTC1.

Plus so far its release is quite small. It will amp up closer to release. but this is likely to breakout in few specific markets than across the country. Hopefully it has a long run considering it has solid reviews. But there is no WAY it out opens Lightyear.
