Since I spent a decent part of the day shitting on Morbius's day yesterday, only fair to note that I am reasonably pleased with today's total.  Well, relatively speaking.  Can't even say it "staunched the bleeding", as the Shang-Chi comp actually increased a smidge.

Could be a dead cat bounce of course.  Still, decent enough day, at least compared to what it's been doing.

*These are the only three movies I've tracked in Santikos.  Yes, I know they are not the best comps.

Aaand Santikos has bought an Alamo theater and is opening it Thursday.  Any thoughts on adding it to the tracking vs leaving it off?  The location has been closed since April 2021, so it hasn't been competition in the area for either of the other movies.

I say add it.  Not strictly the same, but whenever a new theater opens in my regional tracking I always add it and ultimately decided not to worry about adjustments.  At worst I think of it as simulating new theaters getting opened/replaced nationwide.

No real right answer as it'll throw comps off a bit.  Then again, there's so few movies in your track so far for Santikos that adding one at this stage really isn't a big deal as the comps probably haven't stabilized yet.

But if it is opening in a region that had other Santikos theaters, it's gonna be drawing from the same pool of moviegoers even if there are other chains in the area so might as well add it to the total.

(and let's be honest — it'll probably bug you to have those numbers sitting there and not use them, so might as well scratch that itch ;))

I get it now! The studios are just confused! They think midnight is actually noon and are just slowly correcting the previews time.

Not the answer I wanted, but the one I needed.  Yeah, they're all in San Antonio so it would definitely be taking away business from the others.  I guess since it's gonna affect them either way I might as well.

Morbius

Toronto Ontario

Fri April 1 Taken March 29

10 Theatres

64 shows

Total sold 570

Total remaining 16413

total seats 16983

percentage 3.36

But wait, dear Tinalera, I hear you saying, what about your Thursday count?? And why only 10 instead of 13 theatres I hear you cry to the heavens. Well Ladies and Gents, Cineplex went and changed around the format for seats-Pros: Instead of having to press button for every single seat preview, previews are sorted by screen types now (Imax, regular ect) and for each screen type is multiple shows I can just click one to the other to the other. The not great is that each screen type takes up a whole screen (IE I can only do Imax before backspacing to regular-or I would, but instead backspace sends me right back to near beginning of the page. And when I simply change "theatre location" well because Im nowhere NEAR Toronto (London area) it auto goes back to Theatres IN MY AREA, so I have to type "Toronto" again every time to get the Toronto locations every time I change location). So Why only 10 instead of 13? Long story short algorithms are weird with the keywords.

As for why no Thursday? Because the numbers weren't making sense compared to the seating I had for previous thursday count at all, and with the whole changearound for Cineplex site I got flustered (And oh yes, now instead of clicking a seat icon for seating, you have to click preview, okay, fine, except accidently clicking on a showtime automatically takes you to a "buy ticket screen"...and more screen hopping ensues.

ANYWAY, rant over, I'll try and get a final clean sheet of Thurs numbers tomorrow-but the new setup exhausted me a bit:bash:

Mini update from Salt Lake Sugarhouse-

Moribus tickets sold % for Thursday night has shot up to 8.57% but that's mainly because it lost one of it's biggest screens, which I guess is going back to to Lost City. It did add 8 more tickets though, for a total of 29. Still too small for any comps.

FB has been on sale since, what, 10:00 AM? and a total of 8 tickets have been sold, all to one group. The Cinemark XDs around town that I checked are showing 0, 6, 9, 17, and 21 tickets sold for the prime evening show, with the one outlier being Spanish Fork (south part of the Salt Lake Valley), which has sold a rock solid 43.

Local comps are still pretty much in line with The Suicide Squad, which itself had some pretty decent walkup business. So unless Morbius has crazy levels of walk-ups, I really have a hard time predicting much more than 30M.

Honestly, I'd like to see it doing a little better, but Cinemark isn't doing it any favors either by not even having it listed yet on the main header at the top of their page, which is strange since Sonic and Father Stu are there. Hopefully, that will be updated by this evening and we'll have some good reactions coming out of London as well.

The only metric I have to compare it with is Batman which sold 17 tix in the first hour at the Sugarhouse Cinemark, which is the main theater I track, but of course that's skewed by the fan screenings on Tuesday and Wednesday burning off some of the demand. The expert trackers on here will have a lot more info later tonight though.
