The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Do people manually count seats to compile this data, or do they have inside information or computers that somehow do it? Because doing it manually for a city MUST be absolutely painful!!!

@Jeightthe only hook is seeing the Rock as a superhero and whether people want that. This is the case of being about the actor and not the character.

This got lost in all of the handwringing comments about BP2's start, so I'll give it a response now.

Some folks here have developed scrapers that work with some chains.

Some folks here use keyword searches from individual theater chains' showtimes (either via HTML source code or via Inspect Element) or have some other shortcut method to speed up a count

And some folks here are mad enough to actually count the seats in each showtime manually.

So, the answer it, it depends on the tracker. :)

Halloween Ends, counted today at 11am EST for Thursday, October 13:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 138 (7 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 135 (5 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 41 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 5 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 33 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 125 (4 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal):
548 (18 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.025.

Up 13% since yesterday.
Comps (both counted on Tuesday for Thursday): Scream had 1.129 sold tickets

and AQP II had 903 sold tickets.

And Halloween Kills (4.85M from previews) had on Wednesday (= 1 day later) 1.006 sold tickets.

Halloween Ends, counted today at 11am EST for Friday, October 14:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 228 (16 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 105 (11 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 56 (3 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 15 (3 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 32 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 103 (8 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal):
413 (17 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 952.

Up 16% since yesterday.
Comps (both counted on Tuesday for Friday): Scream had 746 sold tickets

and The Conjuring 3 had 797 sold tickets.
And HK (17.95M true Friday) had on Wednesday (= 1 day left for HE) 1.254 sold tickets.

It did not have the biggest jumps till today but good jumps till Wednesday and Thursday are way more important anyway. Overall its presales still point to more than 40M but it lost a little bit in the comps.

PS: Tomorrow I won't count because I'm at a birthday party. But of course on Thursday I count again.

I am hoping for a 40-45% drop for Smile.

I also don't think Halloween is hitting 50M, but it will still be massive at 40M+ anyway, which is where I think it will land.

Anecdotal but I've been talking with a few of the managers who work at various theatres at the company I used to work at, and none of them are particularly confident in Ticket to Paradise. When we're discussing our attendance forecasts for the upcoming weeks, they all suggested I was too bullish on the film when I said it could to (numbers that would be the equivalent of) $18-20M at these theatres.

That is the kind of movie that will open with 10M in North America.
