All official numbers for Warner Bros, movies in CIS include only Russia and Belorussia.  So Aquaman grossed around 27.2 mln RUB on Thursday in Russia and Belorussia (official numbers) and 34,2 mln including other CIS countries (unofficial).

Local movies dominate on New Year day with 75% market share. The best among foreign are Grinch with 46.5 mln RUB or $665k and Aquaman with 31.5 mln RUB or $453k. Aquaman offici;ally passed billion RUB with 1028 mln RUB or $15.5 mln (Russia and Belarus only). Grinch is up to 538.5 mln RUB or $8.1 mln

 

The number one movie was a russian war drama T-34 with 118 mln RUB or $1.7 mln

Thursday estimates. Glass grossed 62.5 mln RUB or $936k. 49% better than Split. Around $5 mln for the weekend. Mary Queen of Scots and Asterix did ok. 

Among holdovers Russian war drama T-34 will pas 2 billion RUB tomorrow. More than $30 mln even with pretty bad exchange rates. 

Last Saturday Grinch passed billion RUB. Pretty good legs after mediocre start.

With 106,3 mln UAH or $3.81 mln Aquaman is the biggest movie ever in Ukraine. The only two other movies with 100 mln+ gross  are Avengers: Infinity War (103.1 mln UAH) and Venom (100.52 mln UAH).  1 064 280 admissions.

I don't whether what I am going to say is true or not, but India films pre 1990s have supposedly sold huge number tickets in USSR. One such, Awara (1951) is said to had around 100 million admissions. Can anyone verify this? Sounds ridiculous to me.

We know Raj Kapoor was huge in Russia, so it's semi plausible. According to BOI, it was 63 million admissions first run and 100M over time. India and the USSR were very close as well till liberalization happened. I remember reading Misha every month. I had a subscription and was sad when the magazine stopped being published because of the USSR dissolution (I was only 4, so the magazine stopping was a bigger deal to me  )

I know but are they possible? I mean Avatar ffs had just 14mn admissions in Russia, say USSR would be 28mn. That's still not close to what that film did in 1951 or other Indian films. Quite possibly, Sholay was world's biggest film in 1975 then, as it had around 150-180mn admissions in India and around 50mn admissions in USSR.

Yes, those are official numbers from our archieves.  In USSR every town had a movie theater or a screen in a youth club. Even many villages had those.  Until recently many towns  with 50 000 - 200 000 population didn't have a modern movie theater.

The most successful film had more than 90 million admissions.  You can find Top1000 list on Russian movie site Kinopoisk.  https://www.kinopoisk.ru/top/lists/184/filtr/all/sort/order/perpage/200/

Many western were also very succesful.  Especially The Magnificent Seven (67 mln admissions) and Mackenna's Gold (63 mln admissions). Even Italian spagetti westerns and german westerns were huge hits. 

I was born in 1978 and i have seen some very popular foreign movies in late 80-s. For example King Kong Lives sold only 1.23 mln tickets in USA and 53.6 mln tickets in USSR.  Remember seeing two  'Crocodile' Dundee movies, Short Circuit, Enemy Mine and many others.

It's a bit complicated i suppose. They lost some appeal already in middle and late 80-s. More foreign movies from USA and Western Europe were released and took their place, Indian films were more like cultural exchange, those were more like first commercial releases. Between 1990 and 1997-1998 film distribution almost completely disappeared, 98-99% of movie theaters were closed.  Everything started from scratch with different market, different tastes and different society.
