filmlover
Gotta admit Universal is doing a pretty A+ job of showing off that they're still committed to making a diverse slate of movies at a time when everything that isn't a $200M tentpole based on familiar IP is seemingly getting banished to streaming. I approve.

grim22
An interesting experiment would be to look back on the Cinemacon hype reactions once a movie has actually come out. Every movie is hyped in a big way since it's theater owners after all, but a good half of these will end up releasing to no fanfare. Like imagine the Cinemacon reaction to The Northman if it had premiered a first look there.

BadOlCatSylvester
Yes, Jurassic World is the closer. Sounds like I was right about Mario not even getting a single mention. See you in the September Direct I suppose, Mario.

SLAM!
I think that's it for Universal They didn't show Distant, and I don't remember if they bothered to show Downton Abbey... 🥲

One factor could be that it was on the same release date as The Woman King, which is quickly gaining a lot of buzz. Also, I wouldn't doubt it if Universal just doesn't know where else to release it. Original sci-fi is very hard to create a zeitgeist for and there's no buzz at all for Distant.

You bet that some movies whose trailers were met with too much hype for the type will neither click with GA nor be big awards players. Cinemacon audience is closer to festival crowd than average Joe so their tasteenthusiasm will also be with some movies that simply don't interest normies. Plus "seen it first" factor clouds judgement as does "I root for X because _________" which are biases that normies don't have. AniNate
I feel like Cinemacon isn't quite the same as festivals but I do imagine their priorities differ quite a bit still. In any case, reactions to a few minutes of footage aren't always indicative of the reaction to the full product.
Jonwo
I find it weird that they refer to Downton Abbey as Focus' first franchise but I'm sure they were behind Fifty Shades of Grey which is very successful for them. TBH given how successful the first Downton was, I wonder why Universal didn't take full distribution.
