Boohoo weekend … bad drops and bad openers and not a single positive item of news from the boxoffice front. So, on to …

next weekend: After the good worldwide start, Wonder Woman opens in Germany and Austria, too. While we can't expect blockbuster numbers, it comes with some positive buzz and a bit of a marketing push from Warner (though not as strong as in the UK as I witnessed during my stay there). It should open to a safe #1, but weather will decide how high it can go, atm Thu and Fri look better for theaters while Sat / Sun should get sunnier again. Going with this forecast, I'd say a 300-350k OW would be ok, everything higher a nice surprise.

Apart from this big production, there's some smaller releases coming, among them Snatched and The Belko Experiment, both with low expectations . Plus a Bob the Builder movie - still popular with the kids, Bob might surprise with little competition in this age group and make it into the Top5.

Some Thursday estimates from insidekino.de/forum:

New Releases:

Wonder Woman: 76.5k (released in 563 theaters, some modest reviews, but mostly they're good and very good) - good
Bob the Builder: Mega Machines: ?k (397, ok reviews)
Snatched: 4.5k (342, pretty modest reviews around 4-6.5/10)
All Eyez On Me: 40k (176, mixed reviews between 3-7/10) – very good if it holds
Maria Mafiosi - Jeder sehnt sich nach Familie: 2.5k (125, overall ok reviews)
The Belko Experiment: ?k (63, very mixed reviews between 1 and 8/10)

Holdovers:

Baywatch: 61k (41.5k) - very good if it holds
The Mummy: 35.5k (actuals last Thursday 32.5k) – better than its opening day but it was overestimated last Thursday
PotC 5: 34k (37.5k) – would also be very acceptable and the film was always underestimated in these Thursday estimates
GotG2: 7k (6.5k)

Most numbers look pretty or even very good but today was/is again a national holiday - Corpus Christi - which helped the films and the multiplier over the weekend will be lower than usual. Tomorrow will often be used as a bridge day, also helpful for the movies. Only the weather isn't. Still, nice numbers so far.

Do you have any comparisons with Suicide Squad and other DCEU?

First, these numbers from today for Wonder Woman are only estimates and they can change - they can go up or down in actuals. So please take them with a grain of salt ;). They only show that WW is doing pretty fine here.
SS had 115k admissions (actuals) and a 500k admissions weekend. The film started in 884 theaters so it got around 300 more than WW.
Today was Corpus Christi which helped Wonder Woman, OTOH I bet WW will have better legs than SS because of the good WOM.

You mean a regional holiday :P

Fronleichnam, just like some other catholic holidays, is only a holiday in a small number of states. Should be the most populous states though, so the effect is quite big.

Yepp. Always the same: In some states a day is a holiday, in some it's a movable holiday, in some it's a normal working day...I was too much based on Bavaria ;).

Some Thursday actuals (source Blickpunkt:Film):

New Releases:

Wonder Woman: 60k
All Eyez On Me: 28k – still good for that low theater number, only 176 → 90k OW predicted in the first trend
Snatched: 6k → 30k OW
Bob: 3k → 15k OW
Maria Mafiosi: 2.1k → 10k OW
The Belko Experiment: 1.3k → ?k OW

So sadly WW and All Eyez On Me were overestimated by far yesterday. Could have been stornos, I don't know.
Snatched, Maria Mafiosi and Bob the Builder started clearly under the expectations.

Holdovers:

Baywatch: 45k (last Thursday actuals 41.5k)
PotC5: 36k (37.5k)
The Mummy: 30k (32.5k on its day of release)

Very nice holds yesterday due to the regional holiday. OTOH it was mostly sunny and warm again (must be one of the best Mays/Junes in many years) which neutralized that effect.

Wonder Woman is a movie about WW1... and some may say depicts Germany in Bad Light.

WOM may be good.. but if everyone exits and tell their friends that their country is put in bad light.. there will be no positive WOM effect.

I'm not sure if that has all that much of an effect. Germans tend to not be overly patriotic, and WW2 movies in which Germans are obviously the bad guys haven't been unpopular either, so Germans being the bad guys shouldn't be much of a problem. If the movie is good, people will see beyond that. I'd say it has more to do with a general lack of interest in comic-book movies, and Wonder Woman being at the very bottom of relevancy when it comes to super-heroes in Germany. Not that Deadpool or Guardians of the Galaxy are more famous, but those tend to have a humour that is rather popular.

That being said, the idea to use WW1 was absolutely idiotic. I guess they didn't want to have yet another WW2-based introduction - which is where Wonder Woman should have appeared - so they just kept the setup and moved it to WW1, which makes no sense whatsoever. And I'm not talking about the use of a Soviet tank from the 1930s ;)

it was poster.

I feel you giant bias against Wonder Woman:ohmyzod:

And?

That's still part of it. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to get such a detail right.

I have no bias against Wonder Woman. And why should I?

If anything, I'd prefer it to most super-hero movies. Not to mention that Gal Gadot is as charming as a person can be.

Doesn't change the fact that using WW1 was n idiotic idea.

Sounds more like you can't handle it if someone else dares to offer an ounce of criticism against something you like...

it's idiotic idea just in your mind.

WW1- it's perfect setting, it isn't stock idea. I'm tired of WW2, and most of people too.

It's just a poster. Can Wonder Woman  lift T-34 ? Yes she can. This poster demonstrates her power, that's all.

Germany is known to be a not-so-fancy of CBM movies market, never expect WW would ever be a huge break out here

Exactly. There are a few exceptions (Spiderman movies tend to do fairly well, as did some Batman movies) but usually CBM, especially Superheroes, stay below the blockbuster treshold. Just this week GotG2 became the highest grossing MCU movie in Germany, and even that won't reach 3mil admissions (apart from the fact that the general audience is probably unaware that GotG is a CBM at all, as was the case with Men in Black)
