BOT's Top 100 Movies of All-Time - 2022 Edition: It's time to let old things die (DEADLINE HAS PASSED)

It's time again for another rendition of BOT's Top 100 Movies of All-Time. We'll have another chance to correct our mistakes from the list from two years ago, and make some new mistakes with this one (maybe this will finally be the year Uncle Drew takes his throne at the number 1 spot). As it is a new year, therer is also a new theme for this list: It's time to let old things die.

Is this a tagline for when the 2000s and 2010s inevitably make up over half of the list? Perhaps. More specifically, this is because have a new voting system! And not just new weights. We are killing ordinal voting systems and switching over to a cardinal voting system.

Wait what, Panda? Why?! Boo, tomato tomato, this sucks. I don’t even know what those words you just said mean!

To put it simply, an ordinal voting system is where you vote purely by ordering your preferences (like in a list of 100 movies). A cardinal voting system allows the user to attach a value to each of their votes. What this will do is provide each user to better communicate and push in their lists for movies they care the most about making the forum list vs the least. Without getting to into the weeds of social choice theory, cardinal voting methods can help lead us to more representative results than ordinal methods.

This isn’t an arbitrary design choice, and it’s one I am expecting could get some (initial) pushback. But we also got pushback when the BOFFYs changed from a first-past-the-post system to a ranked choice system. Now, I think people prefer the new BOFFFY voting methods.

This also isn’t an entirely new or unprecedented way of ranking lists to come up with a group list. In fact, our voting system will look very similar to how the Village Voice aggregates critic album rankings to come up with a Top Albums of the year list (ie their Pazz & Jop series). You can read more about Pazz & Jop here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pazz_%26_Jop)

What does this mean for you and how you submit your list? It can mean one of two things

1.      Nothing. Everyone has the option to just send me a ranked list of 100, 50, or 25 movies and accept the ‘default points allocation’ listed below.

2.      You now write how many you’d like to allocate for each movie as such:

Let’s say your top 5 is:

1.      Raiders of the Lost Ark

2.      Once Upon a Time in the West

3.      Ikiru

4.      Silence

5.      Before Sunrise

You might now send me a top 5 which looks like:

1.      Raiders of the Lost Ark (40 points, 40 total)

2.      Once Upon a Time in the West (40, 80 total)

3.      Ikiru (30, 110 total)

4.      Silence (10, 120 total)

5.      Before Sunrise (10, 130 total)

The first number is how many points you are giving that movie, the second number is the total number of points you have ‘spent’ so far to help you keep track as your rank. In effect, depending on the length of your list, you are given a ‘budget’ of points you can allocate however you wish (with a maximum of 100 points to any single movie and a minimum of 1 point to any single movie). What this allows you to do is to make your own decision on how you’d like your list to be weighted. Maybe you like all of your top 5 equally, then you might change the above ranking to the following:

1.      Raiders of the Lost Ark (40, 40 total)

2.      Once Upon a Time in the West (40, 80 total)

3.      Ikiru (40, 120  total)

4.      Silence (40, 160 total)

5.      Before Sunrise (40, 200 total)

I’ll provide three more examples of how to allocate your points below using a list of 100, 50, and 25.

This is too much, im not doing this. If you read through and think this, know that is fine. You can submit your lists exactly as you have before, if you like.

But this puts my list at a disadvantage! Actually, not really. The default allocation will still give your top ranked choice the maximum 100 points allowed for a movie (for a list of 100), and your list will still be worth the same number of cumulative points as equally sized lists which do the manual allocation option.

Also note: you do not have to describe your points allocation exactly as above, if there’s an easier way for you to type it our feel free to do so. See the example lists

Happy listing! Also as always, movies from this year are ineligible. So no 2022 movies on your list (sorry EEAAO fans)

You cannot do that, as a list of 100 caps you at 1000 points. You could give 10 points to everything.

So can I just give all of my points to Captain America: the Winter soldier, and call it a day?

Also, I will probably bring back the screening room for this. Since the screening room started based off of the 2020 list. So if there’s anything you haven’t seen that are interested in, pm me on Telegram.

You can give 100 points to the Winter Soldier, and that leaves you 900 points to spare for the other Chris Evans and golden age Hollywood films :)

One thing that will also be new to the list when we do the countdown, is there will be some new stats that we’ll be able to sort the list by (none of these will effect how you vote, these are things I will tally and just provide as factoids during the countdown). However I will be calculating voter specific stats, which are used for some calculation of the below category.

Note: Again, these stats will just be for fun. The thing that ultimately effects how films are ordered are how many points each movie gets.

Group Stats

Enthusiasm - How many points per list did a movie get.

Hipsterness - Fraction of the points remaining for a movie if you reweighted points by the inverse-Centricity stat.

CINEMAism - Fraction of the points remaining for a movie if you reweighted points by the inverse-Powism stat.

Tele-ism - Fraction of the points remaining for a movie if you reweighted points by the breadth stat.

Voter Specific Stats

Centricity - How many of a voter’s top 25 ultimately made the full list.

Powism - Fraction of movies on a voter’s list went to a franchise movies

Breadth - How many different decades are represented at least 5 times on a voters list.

Why am I telling you this now? So you know in full advance how your preferences are being tracked by big data (me).

can you use the same movie in multiple slots of your top 100?

No. The maximum points that you can allocate to a single movie is 100, and it will only count as one movie on your list.

I need to find my previous entries and work from there... otherwise I could be forgetting a bunch of bangers I love.

I found my 2018 entry list, wow those are some good movies! I'll make changes that reflect how I've changed and I'll keep it private so the poll results are more interesting. BUT, i'll give you guys 1 spoiler and that is that Avatar is in the top 5
