10 Cocaine Bear 116.000 -83.1% 1.060.000 5.000 53.000

This weekend, R$48.8M was earned by the top 10 and 2.2M tickets were sold, best weekend of the year.

With this, Mario settles as the best opening of the year, doubling Quantumania, the best opening for a non-Disney animation, best for an animation since the pandemic and 4th best overall. It also jumped right into this year's top 5, it should reach the top 3 in no time.

Outside of that, despite Mario's opening JW4 had an impressive hold and Pope's Exorcist had a really decent launch, Puss in Boots left the top 10, Cocaine Bear is completely dead on the second weekend and Shazam 2 approaches 1 million tickets sold, but it is unsure if it still have steam to get there.

Next weekend will (finally) release Dungeons & Dragons, Suzume, Heaven in Hell, Beautiful Disaster and God's Creatures.

Just something I though that might be fun follow as the year goes on, on how 2023 is doing compared to 2022. As you can see, promissing start! But we will need some movies to overperform this month to keep the grown going.

March was the first month that showed a decrease over last year, not helped by the underperformance of Shazam. John Wick 4 barely took the lead of the month, with Scream VI very close to it. On the other hand, with Mario april is guaranteed to go back into profit.

The top 10 this weekend had R$37M total at the box office, selling 1.7M tickets.

Following other countries, Mario had a really healthy drop on its second weekend, almost selling 1 million tickets in its second weekend, D&D also had a good launch and Pope's Exorcist also had a solid hold.

Next weekend will see the release of Evil Dead Rise, Ninguém é de Ninguém, Beau is Afraid and The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan.

The box office on the last 7 days made a total of R$47.9M, third best week of the year.

This friday is a national holiday and on the monday after the next weekend, on may 1st, is another national holiday. Too bad GotG vol.3 only releases after that, it would have made a good boost on its box office.

Mario is at $18M, or R$94M. It increased over last weekend!

Ninguém é de Ninguém also looks to be overperforming a little this weekend, and it feels like ages since that could be said of a brazilian movie.

And Next weekend is going to have a small drop since it has another holiday.

Box office 20 - 23  april

Movie Box Office (R$)             Change (%) Total (R$)    Admissions    Admissions total (Est)

4 John Wick 4 - Baba Yaga 2.406.000 -32.4% 47.821.000 101.520 2.200.000
5 The Pope's Exorcist 1.819.000 -42.7% 12.670.000 85.000 632.000

The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan

1.484.000 --- 1.484.000 60.000 60.000
7 Ninguém é de Ninguém 1.320.000 --- 1.320.000 57.000 57.000
8 Air 818.000 -17.3% 4.000.000 24.000 133.000
9 Coldplay - Music on the Spheres: Live at River Plate 407.000 --- 690.000 11.380 13.400
10 Beau is Afraid 345.000 --- 345.000 15.160 15.160

R$43M was made total by the top 10 with 1.99M tickets sold, second best weekend of the year (In other word, the 3 best weekends of the year were all Mario weekends lol).

Evil Dead Rise having a better release than M3gan was not in my bingo card. It will probably not have the same legs, but audiences scores are at 3.6, pretty good for a horror. Mario had a lower weekend than expected, but still went flat from last weekend and before next weekend it should pass Puss in Boots as the highest grossing animation of the year.

D&D had an excelent hold and it is now close to the million admissions, Niguém é de Ninguém should soon become the highest grossing brazilian movie of the year (kinda sad in a way), Beau is Afraid bombed.

Next weekend will release Renfield, Knights of the Zodiac, Left Behind 2, The Ring 4 and Death of Nintendo.

It has come to my attention that Mario was only the second animated movie ever to be able to remain above R$20M on the third weekend, alongside The Lion King remake.

Tomorrow Disney will already begin playing GotG3 on theaters, BUT in very few, premium, screenings and not in every city. It will probably not gonna be making a impact on the box office and just to get WoM across earlier.

Is pre-sales low here or are they just doing it to build hype?

At first glance, last time I checked, it seemed to be doing normal for a Marvel movie. I guess they want to build hype, or maybe they are seeying a red flag I failed to see...

I think this is doing middle of the road numbers between Ant-Man 3 and Thor 4.

So...

Guardians has sold 430 seats for Wednesday "previews" in 40 showings.

I will be tracking all theaters from greater Salvador area (3rd/4th biggest city in Brazil) for the major releases that I have the time to track. Guardians will be my first data, but only a comp in future for T-7 and beyond.
