On the topic of M3GAN and first weekend of January, I'm going to pull a @MikeQ and leave you guys with a list.

Biggest first weekend of the year openings since 2000 (including wide expansions):

*In this particular calendar configuration I consider January 8-10 the first weekend of the year as nothing ever gets released January 1-3. Remove all January 8 releases if you wish the list to more accurately reflect movies released on the first 7 days of January

1. The Revenant* (expanded wide January 8, 2016)

$39,826,840

2. The Devil Inside (January 6, 2012)

$33,732,515

3. Insidious: The Last Key Key (January 5, 2018)

$29,581,355

4. White Noise (January 7, 2005)

$24,113,565

5. Hidden Figures (expanded wide January 6, 2017)

$22,800,057

6. Texas Chainsa(January 4, 2013)

$21,744,470

7. Hostel (January 6, 2006)

$19,556,099

8. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (January 3, 2014)

$18,343,611

9. Escape Room (January 4, 2019)

$18,238,172

10. A Beautiful Mind (expanded wide January 4, 2002)

$16,565,820

11. Traffic (expanded wide January 5, 2001)

$15,517,549

12. Daybreakers* (January 8, 2010)

$15,146,692

13. The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (January 2, 2015)

$15,027,415

14. Underworld: Blood Wars (January 6, 2017)

$13,688,751

15. The Forest* (January 8, 2016)

$12,741,176

16. One Missed Call (January 4, 2008)

$12,511,473

17. The Grudge (January 3, 2020)

$11,404,113

18. Season of the Witch (January 7, 2011)

$10,612,375

19. Children of Men (expanded wide January 5, 2007)

$10,197,775

14 out of 15 are horror films

The Unborn from 2009 should be there too, with its $19.8m opening (9th Jan).

It’s been a great weekend for horror since White Noise started it all in 2005. I remember on the forums everyone expected $10m for that one.

I didn't include that one because there is a precedent for wide releases on January 2 so I consider January 2-4 to be the true first weekend of the year for that configuration. However we can more broadly include releases from the first 2 weekends,.especially for calendar configurations in which there are two full weekends early on (like January 1 and 8, and January 2 and 9). It's all pretty much the same thing.

Quantity has a quality to itself, especially for Spielberg movies, but it should be noted that James Cameron hasnt even directed 10 feature films while Spielberg is at over 30. Anyone can curse the fact that he will end up dedicating 25 years of his life on Avatar productions if they like but he just didnt have and didnt chose to have the opportunities to venture into completely different genres and movies. Maybe to many its a fault that he didnt try but still chosing to stay in that range for one reason or the other is different from not being able to go outside it or make great movies in other genres and stories. But we'll never know i guess

I mean Camron was making a movie every 2-3 years until he started planning Titanic.

I mean its a bit of irony really as most of us love Titanic but it was that film that really lit his bug for exploring, research, and science. And its the main reason why we have only had AVATAR 1 and 2 since Titanic. I mean he hasnt stopped, he's made multiple docs, produced multiple docs, designed tech, and done multiple explorations.

So yeah Titanic is the main reason why he's stuck on 9 movies (dircted, he's produced and written quite a few more).

I don't know if you intended it, but I heard Kate Winslet's voice from The Holiday reading that second sentence and just became overcome with feels.

Gah, now I need to watch this again this weekend.

Hot take: I know everybody loves Love Actually, but I really don't. I don't think it's great. The Holiday is my go-to during the holidays.

Peace,

Mike

90% ahead of yesterday?, wtf. So 20mil today is a real possibility, wow.

Depends on what kind of ratio our chain is pulling today. If it's the exact same as yesterday then yes and maybe even 21M+ but if it's over-indexing (like M3GAN did yesterday VS the national numbers) then it'll be less. I just don't know how much less.

@keysersoze123 @Shawn may have more numbers they can share that'll provide a better overall look but FWIW we've got A2 running about 90% ahead of the same time yesterday.

M3GAN is about 27% ahead of true Friday.

was that 90% what caused you to post that gif in the morning? ie has that 90% been consistent through the day?

with the slate that 2023 has, do you guys think the domestic gross at year end will reach 2019 levels?

I dont see it. 2023 has imo a better slate than 2022, but this will still be a year of recovery for theaters. Spring and Summer look good this year, but the Fall and Holiday seasons look a bit barren and of the would-be blockbusters this year (Mario/Indy 5/GOTG 3/The Little Mermaid/Aquaman 2), it doesnt look nearly as strong as the 2019 lineup (Endgame/The Lion King/Toy Story 4/Rise of Skywalker/Frozen 2/Far From Home/Captain Marvel/Aladdin).

Though i do have hope that 2023 will continue the upwards trend of 2022.
