So as expected, mission Impossible fell quite harshly and sound of freedom didn't.

A 34% drop from Tuesday isn't very harsh but not very good either. For comparison, Rogue Nation fell 28% from Tuesday

With Barbie taking several Dolby screens last night this drop seems fine to me

How did Barbie have Wednesday showings?

really sucks for MI. Hope Paramount realizes this is clearly a scheduling/marketing problem and not a movie problem (which had its issues of course but its clear that based on critic/audience scores that the people who see it like it)

MI: Dead Reckoning's run is eerily similar to War for the Planet of the Apes. Sequels following extremely well received predecessors and received very good reviews and buzz but Apes ended up being massively crippled by being sandwiched between Spider-Man Homecoming and Dunkirk while MI is being destroyed by Sound of Freedom, Barbie, and Oppenheimer. Hell, DR opened on the exact same weekend on the same calendar configuration and is also facing a Nolan film next wekend

While SoF's run is amazing and the film could very much be in the Oscar mix as well, we need a breakdown of the PiF in the end to see it's true theatrical run.

At the moment, a little less than 10% of the total gross is from PiF tickets.

War for the Planet of the Apes is actually a really good comparison for MI7.  Certainly in how good the film was and the success of its immediate predecessor.

War For the Planet of the Apes was also a well reviewed movie that came out during a string of them too (Homecoming, Baby Driver and Dunkirk)

Regarding to the comparison to WftPotA, that movies was also a downer to watch and extremely sad. Its a masterpiece imo, but its not a "fun time" at the theaters. Dead Reckoning is and should atleast get better late legs than Apes 3.

But i completely agree that the two main problems are scheduling and marketing. Paramount are true clowns and they need to get their shit together with Dead Reckoning Part 2.

Is that official Wednesday number? So SOF made $4.8 m on weds?

No, Jat is projecting 4.8 for MI7 and 4.5 for SOF. BUT, once actuals come in, he predicts there's a decent chance that SOF comes out on top because of PiF (Pay-it-foward).

I think this tends to happen with franchises that have more casual fans than die-hards. Marvel turd managed over 200M dom because of the large number of die-hards. But casuals don't catch all movies in the series and it's hard to predict when they won't care or when they will get distracted by something else (like SoF and Barbenheimer in this case) and skip it.
