Disney Boss Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2 is coming out as a feature — this November. Iger exclaimed the news in a CNBC interview before the studio’s Q1 earnings on how the studio was turning a Moana TV series into a feature sequel. This despite the fact that a live-action version with Dwayne Johnson reprising the role of Maui is also planned for a June 27, 2025 theatrical release.

Note, Disney always books the five-day Thanksgiving five-day Wednesday-Sunday stretch with an animated movie annually. They always had a Nov. 27 release date for an animated movie.

Why more Moana? The 2016, 2x Oscar nominated animated movie which racked up over $687M at the global box office remains a must-watch hit on Disney+. At a time when Disney is looking to recalibrate itself at the box office with qualitative franchises after misfires such as the original feature toon Wish, Marvel Studios’ The Marvels and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, more Moana is a safe bet for the House of Mouse.

Holy shit, this came out of nowhere since there were never proper talkings about a sequel.
It's almost ceirtinly hitting a billion. The first one grossed "only" 630M but it became a sensation with home media

Part two will takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

No word if Johnson is returning as the voice of Maui.

The lack of Lin here is a real "huh" moment. Just kinda feels awkward not to have him on board when he was so crucial towards its success.

Oh, well, no LMM...but as long as they don't repeat the same problem they did with the songwriting for WISH, ok.

Nothing will slap as much as Where You Are but ok.

If this was originally supposed to be a TV show that would explain why LMM isn't involved like y'know they didn't get Elton John back for the straight to video lion king movies. But now it'd be funny if it wins the best song oscar.

Oof I’m less excited about this now. I guess since it was originally supposed to be a series and they wanted him just feature films?

Just realized there's precedence to make the Tiana show into a movie as well after this. Which I guess would work okay. Both Tiana and her movie are more popular than ever, and you can sell it as "2D animation is back!"
