And here's Deadline's writeup for contrast:

Quote

EXCLUSIVE: Sources tell us that 20th Century Studios Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is off to a good start with previews around $6.5M. That’s comprised of Thursday night money which began accruing at 3PM and around $1.6M from Wednesday fan shows that began at 7PM.

We’ll know tomorrow AM if it’s the best Thursday night ever for an Apes movie besting 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes which did $5M on its preview night before a $22.1M Friday and $56.2M opening. This Wes Ball directed PG-13 sequel takes place 300 years after the events of Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes.

RT Verified score is nuts.

B-/C+ Cinemascore incoming.

The movie barely has any action so I can't say this is a big surprise.

It's easily one of the more thoughtful blockbusters in years.

It seems like this is facing the same issue as the last movie, namely that its methodical, lumbering tone is turning off a lot of people outside of the core demographic. That new trilogy likely isn't happening anymore, but Wes Ball should be able to get his Zelda movie off the ground at least.

It’s not even 6 AM on the East Coast. Don’t need these proclamations this early dawg

We are already cancelling the trilogy this early in its run. I like your style.

This was more engaging than War. Kingdom, and Dawn are the standouts to me.

82% verified audience score and 79% all audience score is really low starting scores for a PG-13 franchise movie.

So, GA hates it and the base loves it...keep that in mind for legs (even for Sat/Sun, although Fri should be baked in where it's gonna be)...although still just 100+ reviews, so that could change...

Hates it? That's really hyperbolic.
