He's far from a masterful director. How can anyone say he's a MASTERFUL director when the last 20 minutes of DH2 were all over the place? He doesn't have to be masterful to be great. Besides, DH1 is PERFECT.

To be fair to Yates though he did direct one of the best BBC dramas ever.

Yates had a fantastic cast and crew handed to him on a plate as well as the books as a very film-friendly template. I doubt he'll ever make a blockbuster again.

They wanted Nolan, but I'm sure that he wants a new Bnd and Daniel Craig can't be replaced yet. Whenever a new actor will play Bond, Nolan gets the job.

Mendes directs circles around Yates and it seems likely he'll come back now so it doesn't really matter. More Mendes probably means more Roger Deakins so hurrah to that.
