Joker: Folie à Deux Weekend Thread

Maybe, but it's less the emotions part and more the girl lead part. 2000s pop-culture was incredibly hostile towards women and girls moreso than now. Marie Antoinette and Jennifer's Body (and the aforementioned Josie), were laughed off as jokes but have now garnered plenty of appreciation. Studios weren't big into greenlighting female-led movies beyond romcoms and Best Actress vehicles, including the "Home of Disney Princesses" WDAS (which is weird because Lilo & Stitch was one of their biggest films of the decade despite their truly unhinged obsession to win over more boys at the time)

Ironically the Shrek franchise capitalized on the lack of Disney Princess films in the 00s by making fun of the formula but still delivering the aesthetics and sentiments lmao. It's one of the biggest reasons why Shrek V will explode unless trailers and reviews stink like ogre's swamp.

In fairness for WDA, it was less to spite the girls but moreso to chase the Pixar/Dreamworks/Blue Sky dragon back in the early to mid 2000s. The romance female centric My Peoples got canned for Chicken Little, Chicken Little went from a father daughter story to an average Dreamworks C-lister with aliens and they even were going to make Pixar sequel knockoffs theatrically (the world will never see racist Woody or the weird romance Marlin and a Polar Bear), at one point Tangled was going to be a Shrek like comedy in which two teens (one of which played by Jack Black) are forced to save the fairytale characters of Rapunzel and her prince who were turned into animals.

So lower than projected, not surprising.

First weekend was PLF-heavy and it’s based on a book series. Plus…it’s kinda overhyped on the internet. It’s a good film but good enough to have super strong legs. Without a Pixar or Disney label slapped on it there’s less incentive for the GA to go out and see it.

The current top 10 adds up to like 40 in terms of sequels/remakes/reboots/spin offs of the same stories. We’ve already seen Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in like 8 different films by now.

It usually/always is.

Can’t people just accept that those are what keeps the lights on in cinemas for you to see films you might find more interesting and original.

Nah.

Gaga stans being Todd Phillips's No.1 defenders was not on my 2024 bingo card

In all seriousness though, I don't see how you can call GA dumb just because they're rejecting your favu's vanity project when the best performing films from the last 2 years include Barbie, Oppenheimer, Across the Spider-Verse, Inside Out 2 and Dune 2, all films that would have been considered as "risque" and "overintellectual" for the masses in the 2000s and maybe even in the 2010s

what’s “risqué” and “over intellectual” about Inside Out 2? If anything that movie plays it too safe.
