Very, very huge for Maleficent.  This likely locks up 600,000+ admissions for the weekend, meaning we could see a weekend north of ¥800 million ($8 million+).  And an opening over ¥800 million makes a total of ¥5-6 billion ($50-60 million) resonable.

Edge of Tomorrow did 15,234 admissions at Toho yesterday, which would out it on track for 150-200,000 admissions and ¥200-250 million ($2-2.5 million).  Remember though that this doesn't include what it made on Friday, or last weekend's previews.

Yeah, Fridays or any other days in release aren't counted towards the weekend (Sat/Sun).   Opening weekends in Japan are just 2-days.

Why? Friday-after-work is not considered by Japanese as weekend time yet? Movies don't post bigger numbers than on Thursdays?

Friday have never been counted as part of the weekend.  And they do about the same business as Mon-Thur, too.

If a film opens on a Friday, like Edge of Tomorrow, Friday usually accounts for just 15% or so of the 3-day weekend total.

Weekdays are also on par with Weekend grosses most of the year, so that's why you also see high totals but small weekend grosses.

2011's drop looks big, but it mainly looks that way because 2010 is the biggest box-office year of all-time in Japan. :P The tsunami effected March/April, but the rest of the year was honestly perfectly fine.

It wasn't just below 2010 though, below every year back to 2000. And neither 2012 or 2013 have managed to get back to 2001-2010 levels.
