JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

They should sell the tickets online. Why make them wait in a line so early in the morning. They can get Yokai medal mailed to them or they can print out the ticket to collect the medal at any time without a rush or wait in line.

This reminds me of the thousands of people waiting on an Iphone release day at the stores when they have the option to simply pre-order it online.

In Canada, there are more reserved seating theaters % than USA. Even our IMAX theaters are 100% reserved seating so I buy them all in advance (sometimes 3 months in advance), and arrive to the movie 5 minutes before it starts. You have to pay a premium price for reserved seating though. IMAX tickets are $20 . Large premium screens are also 100% reserved seating and are $15 to $18.

I don't recall buying any movie ticket 6 months in advance though. That's crazy.

Alright, so Pokemon was #1 at Aeon Cinemas as expected, but it was also #1 at the Shikoku cinemas, too.  Shikoku has few locations, but sometimes they matter in close races, and Maleficent ranked 3rd there this weekend.

I still think Maleficent will be #1 in gross for the weekend, though.  But if Pokemon is #1 at both United Cinemas and Cinema Sunshine, especially the former... then maybe it did win the weekend in both admissions and gross.

Because Frozen is WAY more awesome and Japan loves it. :D

Monday 19.00

*1 *62727 Maleficent*2 *47310 Pokemon*3 *41684 Marnie*6 *13161 EoT*7 *11038 Frozen*9 *10333 Planes 2

Planes2 less than Frozen?

This is not surprising.

As I have posted here, Japanese ice skating super star Mao Asada and her sister performed "Let it go " yesterday

and the show is broadcast all over the country via TV. Mao is super popular in Japan, so today Frozen

has some sellouts ...

So the first 500,000 advance tickets for the first Youkai Watch movie to be released on Dec. 20th went on sale Friday, and they've all sold out already...

People began lining up outside theaters as early as 4am Friday morning, and here are some photos people captured:

And the first 500,000 people to purchase a ticket also received this exclusive Yokai medal that can be used in their own yokai watches:

So this is looking to be a massive movie in Japan? And BH6 is going up against it on Dec. kinda anxious for it.

Nobody expected Planes 2 to be successful,it's not an ambitious movie to begin with.

To be correct, nobody expected it to be huge. It only carries a $50m budget, so only needs modest returns WW to turn a profit. The first earned ~$210m WW, (about $10m in Japan). And really anything it does north of $150m will be a success. Also, it's not from either Pixar or WDAS, but rather from DisneyToons, which had historically done the direct-to-video sequels to bigger Disney hits, but more recently mostly does the Tinkerbell films.

It's worth remembering, though, that while Pixar has a long history of success in Japan, before Frozen, the biggest WDAS film was Dinosaur, which earned under $50m. WiR did under $30m and Tangled around $31m. Bolt did $16m. Meet the Robinsons and The Princess and the Frog didn't even get to $10m.
