JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

1200 number are pretty close to yesterday but will be weaker in the evening as people go back to work tomorrow. Looks like JW should definitely fall between 7.5m-8m, up 10-15%, this after dropping multipliers by 12%, should be right, if not short.  Minions +10%. MI5 flat

Mite make close to $8m this weekend. $65m the floor. Could make $80-100m

Agree! Amazing for JW!

For MI5, I think 40m is the floor. Not sure if it has a shot at 50m?

IO, at that point, maybe 30m as a floor for it and Minions 35m as a floor?

Not sure about AOT, but am starting to think it won't cross 25m...

1400 sun- sun comparisons

JW +4%

MI5 -6%

Min +8%

IO +0%

Thinking MI5 $45, matching MI4's admissions

75m locked on JW w these increase

still holding firm on 40m for minions

AOU probably made 1m the past 7 days. wont make more than that the rest of the run

This is amazing. Even with how successful JW has been overall, Japan was still a big question mark.

It's great to see it overperform there to make 1B OS a reality where people were already declaring it impossible.

Pixar's Inside Out, released in Japan under the title Inside Head, held on to the ninth spot in its fifth weekend in theaters and has now grossed $25.65 million (3.19 billion) for Disney in Japan.

Jurassic World actually managed a second weekend increase, and even if this weekend was boosted by this year's Obon Festival, it's a mighty accomplishment considering how well it opened last week.

According to weekend estimates, the Top 10 delivered the 7th Biggest Weekend of All-Time, just after last weekend delivered the 4th Biggest Weekend of All-Time.

It's also the Biggest Weekend of All-Time without any new openers (the Frozen lead weekend on the list had two openers make the Top 10).

And that's not all. This weekend makes the FOURTH weekend in the past 9 months that's crack the Top 10 below:

Biggest All-Time Weekends (Top 10 Films) [1998-]

01. ¥3.601 billion - 07/09-10/2005 (#1 Film - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith)
02. ¥3.427 billion - 05/03-04/2014 (#1 Film - Frozen)
03. ¥3.423 billion - 07/19-20/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!)
04. ¥3.379 billion - 08/08-09/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
05. ¥3.329 billion - 07/21-22/2007 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
06. ¥3.314 billion - 07/22-23/2006 (#1 Film - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest)
07. ¥3.267 billion [Estimate] - 08/15-16/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
08. ¥3.160 billion - 04/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Alice in Wonderland)
09. ¥3.129 billion - 04/18-19/2015 (#1 Film - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F)
10. ¥3.048 billion - 07/21-22/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
11. ¥3.046 billion - 12/20-21/2014 (#1 Film - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!)
12. ¥2.963 billion - 07/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Arrietty)
Out:
-¥2.960 billion - 07/18-19/2009 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)

2015 has been an incredibly strong year at the Japanese Box Office. There hasn't been an uber-blockbuster released, but most films are breaking out and exceeding expectations. There have been dozens of various records broken.

Before this crazy summer began (end of June), the year was only down 8% from last year. It's likely to close that gap, or end up ahead of last year by the end of August. If Fall of this year delivers in the same manner, 2015 could challenge 2010 as the biggest year of all-time.

So $70M+ is looking good for Jurassic World?

1.8m Monday, flat from 2 Fridays ago before obon, huge hold. May be 8-9m m-f and a 6m weekend after. Will be near 50m on sunday. 80m+ looking good

Did JW exceed forecasts this past weekend?

yes. 10% increase over a huge OW is very impressive

Lawrence, what's your assessment of MI5 and Minions' holds on this Monday compared to their previous week before Obon? Are their holds good?
