Even with the holiday and ladies' day, that number proves how Beasts has avoided the fate of the Hobbits.

Well, it might make in it's first 2-3 day more than the last Hobbit in it's entire run so I would say it did more than avoid Hobbit's fate.

That is seriously massive. Definitely a potential 10B+ grosser but tomorrow should be a good indicator. If I remember correctly the first Harry Potter is the 4th largest in Japan with 20.3B. Hopefully this does not hurt Your Name's historic run to 20B - though it should be pretty much locked at this point

Uh, Corpse update was 3PM, not situation is more clear.

OD admisisons is about 10% better than TFA OD, but ticket price will be cheaper.

Still thinking 600-650M yen OD, hopefully we'll have official numbers tomorrow..

Your Name made 570M yen on that day, even though FB OD is discount day but 3D/4D will bump up the ticket price a bit.

Olive, do you know where in it's run did YN have this biggest day? I am curious.

Also, does FB have any chance of beating it's OD on one of the weekend days (Sat/Sun)?

Not sure about FB's later run.

Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest First Days
Usual Locations [Two-Thirds of Market] - Hourly Ticket Sales [First Days]

10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 1PM > 2PM > 3PM > 4PM > 5PM > 7PM > 10PM > FINAL

57,664 > x71,049 > 120,559 > 147,896 > 161,461 > 224,280 > 232,920 > 248,114 > 286,991 > 317,443 > 318,206 - Fantastic Beasts

Compared to:
74,565 > 116,519 > 144,266 > 177,687 > 206,086 > 240,279 > 271,568 > 281,438 > 308,702 > 317,438 > 317,709 - Yo-Kai Watch 2
52,996 > x60,631 > x75,890 > 117,855 > 124,236 > 147,342 > 187,892 > 197,398 > 226,441 > 286,005 > 293,246 - Star Wars: Episode VII
39,622 > x55,638 > x79,473 > x99,228 > 124,143 > 156,171 > 176,298 > 194,209 > 229,193 > 285,429 > 289,656 - Detective Conan 20
63,854 > x89,438 > 109,249 > 128,842 > 148,074 > 177,219 > 197,555 > 209,978 > 235,145 > 283,231 > 286,726 - One Piece Film Gold

Fantastic Beasts managed to sell more tickets on its first day than the other uber-openers of the past 12 months, but only barely after it really, really lost momentum after 5PM. Either the majority of audiences rushed to see it earlier in the day since they have work/school tomorrow, and/or it's skewing noticeably young like its Harry Potter predecessors.

With 318,206 admissions from the usual locations, it sold somewhere between 475,000-525,000 admissions for the day, earning around ¥650-750 million ($6-7 million). That's still very impressive, even for a very inflated first day (national holiday + Ladies' Day), but slightly disappointing after its morning/afternoon ticket sales suggesting something much higher - even potentially record setting.

Thursday and Friday are just ordinary weekdays, so it's going to drop really hard the next couple days and we really won't know where it may be headed in the market until the weekend. I don't see any impressive ticket sales yet for Saturday at some of the more popular theaters, so I don't believe we have a surprise blockbuster here.
