It doesn't look like there's any pre-Obon boost yet, nor recovery from the deflated weekend due to sunny weather.

There is a heat wave in Japan atm. And I do think dropping 17% and 20% is pretty good considering the weekend drops where a lot harsher.

Will the August 10-11 weekend be one of the biggest ever?

Quote

It's a good candidate. I doubt it competes for for the top spot, but a Top 10 ranking is certainly doable.

As for the weekend, One Piece Film Stampede is receiving the most seating on Friday, followed by The Lion King, and then Weathering With You (losing ~30/35% of its seating, which isn't bad against two big openers). One Piece is guaranteed to be huge out of the gate, so it's no surprise that most theaters are playing it on their biggest screens to begin. Depending on how the weekend plays out, I expect One Piece and The Lion King to be pretty close in terms of seating on Monday and throughout the Obon Festival holiday period, with Weathering With You being a close third.

And remember: more seating/biggest screens doesn't always result in a bigger opening weekend, just the potential of having one.

And I was expecting Aladdin to experience a likely collapse given Disney's release strategy in the market, but it's "only" losing 45/50% of its seating on Friday. This is high, of course, but it certainly could have been much higher (easily 60/70%+).

I have a question guys, I checked mimorin it says that WEATHERING movie sold 478k Admissions but then I checked TokyoHive or basically Jpn BO Sites, it says that WEATHERING sold 505k Admissions. Why there's difference? Also isn't 1400 Yen the ATP for most of the movies? Thanks in advance

Never heard of tokyohive.

Mimorin only reports a percentage of the total box office, from major theater chains in Japan. I think at least.

First of all, where did you get 478k? The weekend number for last weekend (Sat-Sun) on mimorin site was 340,211. Second of all, this is just partial, only from main theater chains, not all theaters. It's about 65-70% of the whole admissions. So it makes sense that the total admission for the weekend was 505k.

Ticket prices vary between movies. For TS4 it's around ¥1300, for WWY around ¥1360 and for Hobbs & Shaw around ¥1500.

That 478k number is including Fri too. Then where we can see top 20 movies at the JPN box office other than Mimorin including all theaters cume?

I believe it's only sometimes we see those numbers? I think there's some place that gives out yen totals publicly, but I'm not sure about admissions. Corpse subscribes to a trade magazine that reports precise numbers though.

Oh okay. That 505k was only Sat and Sun. Weekend numbers on Japanese sites are always for Sat and Sun only. Unless it's a new opener, and it opens on Friday, then they usually will give both numbers, the 3-day and 2-day weekend.

And to answer your question: nowhere. We only have Corpse, who kindly give us numbers for the top 10 every week, because he/she has access to the data. Sometimes for movies outside the top 10 too. But other than that, we can only get box office numbers from reports or news or articles or twitter feeds, even then not all movies are available.

Japan has a lot of interesting quirks to its box office. First of the month discount, discount Wednesday, women's discount, ( I think there's a 14th of the month discount, but correct me if I'm wrong.)

I'm just now remembering this.

Women's discount?

Early rumblings are that One Piece might have the biggest opening Friday of the year?

And that The Lion King is probably not going to make over 1 billion yen Saturday + Sunday.

I won't be surprised with the first one. One Piece franchise is frontloaded, so whatever day its OD is, it's gonna be huge. And since other Friday openers were not that frontloaded (hence, relatively low OD), it's easy for One Piece to have the biggest opening Friday.

The second one is kinda surprising for me. I mean it'a not a princess story like BatB or Aladdin, but I thought the popularity of the musical would give TLK the same opening as those two.

can One Piece open above ¥1.46B and claim the biggest OW of the year? the last 2 one piece movies opened to ¥1.15B and ¥1.37B respectively. though I believe in 2012 it was around the peak of one piece's popularity after marineford arc.

Doubtful. One Piece is extremely frontloaded, and Corpse thinks opening on a Friday this time will deflate the weekend numbers overall.

Quote

The last three One Piece films have opened above ¥1 billion, but they all opened on Saturday. Stampede would easily open above ¥1 billion with a Saturday release (it's celebrating the anime's 20th anniversary, too), but the Friday release this time around could prevent it from doing so. There haven't been many cases of Friday openings affecting the weekend business too much since it became the standard last year, but it could in this case since it's a frontloaded franchise during the summer vacation (granted, One Piece's audience skews older anyway).

It appears on course to have the biggest Friday of the year so far.

probably not. But are you including Friday in that total?
