JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

This weekend isn't doing very good for all the holdovers

WwY dropped about 29%(best hold among top 10)

TS4 - 33%

Actual number may vary as usual.

Since we're in the summer season and movies make more on weekdays than weekends, I think we should look at weekly drops rather than weekend drops to determine how good they're performing.

Drops this weekend are a little on the high side, but as I've mentioned a few times since Friday, the weather was clear and sunny this weekend compared to the rainy/stormy weather that's been frequent since summer vacation began two weeks ago. I'd estimate the declines to be ~5% worse. And since summer vacation is only six-weeks in Japan, it's very understandable that people would want to be out enjoying the long-awaited nice weather. Especially since the rain and storms are forecast to return again in a few days.

>Hobbs & Shaw performed pretty well, likely earning a second place debut. And if the estimate holds, it managed a solid 25% decline from its predecessor. That's good audience retention for a spin-off, which tend to decline 30/40%. The Fast & Furious franchise has been a bit frontloaded, but Obon Festival should mostly counter this. It should be good for around ¥3 billion (~$30 million), and ¥2.5 billion+ ($25 million) should be nearly guaranteed.

>Dragon Quest: Your Story did alright. Domestic CGI films are hit or miss, more often misses, and I'd consider this debut to be comparatively good. Since Dragon Quest is such a well-known brand, I could see the film having some impressive legs due to being a familiar name to see over the upcoming Obon Festival holiday period. If it can exceed ¥2 billion (~$20 million), I think Toho will be fairly satisfied.

Since the weather strongly appears to have negatively impacted the weekend box-office a bit, expect most films to deliver slightly stronger than usual weekdays coming up.

But weekend holds tend to got carried over to weekdays....

Well both of those movies did better last week than Corpse predicted.

Also there's still Obon.

But this week competition is lighter than the coming week. next week we have one piece as sure fire hit and TLK which snatch away the premium and IMAX screen

Corpse on the August 10-11 weekend.

It's possible, but unlikely. [Increases from last weekend] The 10th and 11th are right before Obon Festival really begins to result in increases (dailies or weekend). But they're close enough that the holds will certainly be strong, sub-20/25% holds and single-digits declines are doable. Although, since this past weekend was deflated slightly, an increase or two (probably Weathering With You, Toy Story 4, and maybe Pets 2) isn't unreasonable.

August 12-16th will be the biggest days this year, and they're all during the weekdays. When this happens, the weekdays can be two or three times greater than the prior weekend. The August 17-18th weekend will also be pretty strong, as well. I doubt anything will increases, but it'll still benefit from the end of Obon Festival and see strong holds across the board (again, probably all sub-20/25% with single-digit declines likely for some).

Look for films targeting families/children/teens to experience the biggest boost during the Obon Festival. Adult-targeting films also enjoy some benefit, but not nearly as much since some workplaces are still ongoing during the holiday period.

TS4 barely has PLF screens now so screen is not an issue, the real concern is TLK and One Pieve will grab the potential audience. I would be happy if TS4 reaches ¥10b in the end, even only ¥10.01b. You can't expect similiar legs with a much higher OW and bigger competition.

Weekend Actuals (08/03-04)
01 (01) ¥718,133,400 ($6.8 million), -29%, ¥5,908,466,600 ($54.8 million), Weathering With You (Toho) WK3

04 (---) ¥309,000,000 ($2.9 million), 0, ¥444,504,700 ($4.2 million), Dragon Quest: Your Story (Toho) NEW
05 (03) ¥178,550,600 ($1.6 million), -33%, ¥867,319,700 ($8.1 million), The Great War of Archimedes (Toho) WK2
06 (05) ¥155,079,500 ($1.5 million), -30%, ¥776,825,500 ($7.3 million), The Secret Life of Pets 2 (Toho-Towa) WK2
07 (06) ¥127,237,300 ($1.2 million), -39%, ¥11,363,570,600 ($104.7 million), Aladdin (Disney) WK9
08 (04) ¥115,030,700 ($1.1 million), -53%, ¥589,463,900 ($5.4 million), Kamen Rider Zi-O: Over Quartzer! (Toei) WK2
09 (07) ¥114,159,600 ($1.1 million), -30%, ¥2,030,435,700 ($18.7 million), Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution (Toho) WK4
10 (11) ¥x30,295,000 ($286,000), -31%, ¥1,236,216,200 ($11.7 million), Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: Maji LOVE Kingdom (Shochiku) WK9

Note: Drops this weekend were slightly higher than normal due to the weather.

>Weathering With You achieved its third-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, selling a further 505,000 admissions and bringing its 17-day admissions up to 4.33 million. Makoto Shinkai's latest is now tracking 6% behind his previous film, Your Name., but with the upcoming Obon Festival holidays coming up, it may catch up after a couple of weeks. We'll need to see the sort of boost it does receive from the holiday period before projecting a likely finish, however, a total around ¥15 billion ($140-150 million) continues to look good. A total of ¥15.61 billion is needed to enter the All-Time Top 10, which would knock Avatar off the list.

>Hobbs & Shaw performed very well, and even broke the ¥500 million mark in its debut weekend. The spin-off to the popular Fast & Furious franchise sold 331,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 734 screens, and reached 476,332 admissions since opening on Friday. This opening is only off 20% compared to The Fate of the Furious, which is quite impressive or a spin-off entry in any franchise. Expect a total between ¥3-3.5 billion ($30-35 million).

>Toy Story 4 slips to third place, selling an additional 305,000 admissions over its fourth weekend of release, bringing its 24-day admissions up to 5.12 million. The fourth entry in the franchise continues to post good numbers, but I do believe it's clear now that it's not achieving its full potential following its record-setting opening weekend since it should be holding better. This weekend is a bit of an exception due to the weather, but its weekdays have also been a little lacking. That said, it's clearly still doing very well and continues to outpace Toy Story 3 and Finding Nemo, but it's likely to fall behind both films on a weekly basis beginning this week, so its lead will begin to shrink pretty quickly. It's also still likely to outgross both films and become Pixar's highest grossing film in the market, though a total of ¥12 billion ($110 million) is becoming its ceiling.

>Dragon Quest: Your Story, the CGI film based on the very popular video game series (Dragon Quest IV) from acclaimed director Takashi Yamazaki, settles for a solid fourth place debut. The film sold a solid 215,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 313 screens, and reached 314,745 admissions since opening on Friday. Domestic CGI films remain very hit or miss, and overall, this is a pretty good result comparatively. We'll see if the fanbase causes the film to have a certain degree of frontloading to it, but Obon Festival should counter most of that. I'm expecting a total between ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million).

Beginning today, Monday, August 5th, I'm going to begin posting Weekday Estimates. The Obon Festival Holiday Period isn't until next week, but we'll slowly begin to see the benefit and boost that the holiday frame will provide here soon.
