COVID killed all possible competition, but that wouldn't have created the absolutely ludicrous records we saw if it didn't line up with what was basically the biggest zeitgeist ever to begin with. And DS obviously can't get to 40b without the extra help.

I think it’s less about “competition” and more about the fact that Japan was looking for a show to latch onto during lockdown. DS was popular, but it could have never reached these absurd 90% of the country is watching or whatever the surveys said level if not for lockdown. It was still a very new anime, so easily accessible and had momentum already. It was a perfect storm. I say 20b tops wo covid.

This series was exploding beyond belief well before COVID became a thing in jp so I'm not even sure based on what you're saying half (!) its BO is covid-related. I very much disagree.
