Star Trek 2 OS thread

Recommended Posts

The other point to be made regarding the larger overseas marketing spend is that the overseas grosses were never going to increase this much of their volition. They had to have a big surge like this in order to expand awareness and try to dampen the whole 'Star Trek is uncool' attitude.

If the legacy of this increased spend is that Star Trek films now always gross over $200m overseas then it will be money well spent.

If they had spent the same o/s as Star Trek 09 and we were now looking at around $125m overseas then I have no doubt that the same people currently decrying the 'huge' marketing spend would now be attacking Paramount for not spending enough!

You have to spend money to make money. Yes the overseas take is a bit disappointing compared to expectations, but realistically you have to look at the historical context of the franchise. It's not as simple as saying, 'hey look at all dem Marvel films, Star Trek should be able to do that too!'.

Dont forget that at least 50% goes to theaters. So with zero marketing you might get 2 millions out of 4

With 8 millions you will receive probably 4. Minus 3m you spent for advertising.

That's exactly how it works here. In 2009 only sci-fi geeks came. Almost no casual moviegoers.

But now advertising was everywhere. Two weeks ago I watched Formula-1 race on Russian TV.  In 2 hours they showed 5 or 6 times the same TV-spot. TV-spots were  during major football games or just inside of advertising blocks. And it wasn't for free.

Our newspapers and magazines for months tried to tell that Star Trek is cool. It was very strong and well organised campaing from very beginning. They nearly tripled screen count in Russia and average ticket price increased by 80% thanks to 3D, IMAX and inflation.

Look at screen count in other markets. in 2009 and now.

Mexico  447 - 1251

Sweden 60 -126

Norway  56 - 145

Singapore 59 - 86

Malaysia 85 - 190

Hong kong 45 - 82

New Zealand 51 - 102

Romania 9 - 43

Where did you get that number? Not true at all. Hong Kong had over 100 screens in 2009 and still has over 100 screens today.

From mojo and boxoffice weekend charts for ST and STID. Its a screen count for a movie. Not for the whole market.

Trek just can't get an audience OS. It's really flabbergasting, every shit action movie does as much or more. Two really well produced, critically acclaimed, big budget "spectacles" and pretty much nobody cares. One of the biggest mysteries of the 21. century. These grosses are so low, even the stigma that is supposedly attached to the franchise doesn't explain it, at least not fully.

21.7M OS MON-SUN,poor.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. Not a good drop. I hope China can help Trek to 200M OS. I don't think it's gonna do well in Korea, but a surprise would be nice.

[*]Star Trek Into Darkness crossed $100m through Paramount Pictures International following a $13.1m haul from 3,949 locales in 40 international markets that boosted the tally to $102.1m.

The sci-fi sequel added $2.7m from 511 locations in the UK for $29.2m after three weekends and the film is closing in on the lifetime total of Star Trek. German audiences generated $1.9m for $16.2m after three and the film is already 30% ahead of its predecessor’s lifetime tally.

Russia produced $1.8m for $9.4m after two weekends and has generated more than double the final gross of Star Trek. Australia delivered $1.8m for $12.8m after three and has overtaken Star Trek, while Mexico has produced $6.4m after three, which is almost twice as much as Star Trek.

Star Trek Into Darkness has amassed more than $34m worldwide on IMAX screens.  G.I. Joe: Retaliation stands at 239.2m.
