@jb007 usually we are on the same page but im taking the other side this time. I dont think anyone was speaking disparagingly about Star Wars. I think you misunderstood what he was saying.

Baumer: I felt he was trying to imply that the majority opinion was not correct since he felt otherwise.

I wish that the poster @Tower would clarify whether that was his intention or he was taking @JonathanLB literally that every guy likes Star Wars. Nobody can be that naive in life to think that something will be liked by everybody.

But you think your opinion is part of the majority opinion considering that SW has been the most dominant franchise in movie history. The 7th movie in the franchise brushed aside the previous record holder in NA like it was nothing. Wake up and smell the coffee.

SW is obviously very popular, it would be silly to try and dispute that. I was responding to someone who just assumed that every guy has to like SW, and if you didn't you must be a girl.

China has the Golden Rooster Awards, one of several, which is its Oscar equivalent.

But hey, don't let this trivial get in the way of your cheap jab.

LOL, calm your pants, buddy. It was a joke. Got nothing against China, but I do have something against whiney people who feel offended by everything.

Oh, please, don't start this. SW = US and, to some extent, UK. That's pretty much it. It's not even remotely close to being the biggest movie franchise in history on a WW level.

Just out of curiosity, what's the biggest movie franchise then?

not movie, but the biggest franchise I know about (movies, tv-Series, books, graphic novels,..) is the story about RL back ~ 250y living Musashi (rings,...)

TDKR came out with Amazing Spiderman... and the latter is more popular with chinese audiences and has 3D showtimes yet TDKR won. The next weekend I believe Expendables 2 came out, and no1 knew Jet Li was just having a cameo role. Not forgetting TDK did not even get shown in Chinese theaters. Yes, I don't think TDKR did extremely well, but I think it performed beyond the expectations of many with a bad release date, and lack of 3D cinemas.

I guess Spidey can be a trump card for Civil War in China if Marvel shows him in their marketing.

Seems like a pretty normal monday drop to me, JW dropped 64%. Or are you saying because it's its 3rd day the drop should have been less?

1 hour ago, The Good Olive said:

JW was more a family movie, it had big increases on weekends, I think EP7 won't increase as much.

AOU fell 73% on its first and second Monday. JW skewed older as it drew demos outside the young male driven SH/scyfy genres

AOU then bumped 40%/80% on Fri/Sat like spidey and others. 65% is not bad. Tomorrow hold is critical as well as Fri bump.

My guess is without nostaglia glasses the Chinese see the film for how it actually is.

Well it's not a standalone movie, so prior knowledge (which i guess nostalgia falls into) of the events/characters in the previous film, would dampen reaction to a film. Nostalgia is not a bad thing, it is something that is important to franchises like Star Wars. If I went in and lets say watched the 4th Hunger Games movie for example, without seeing the previous film, I'd think it's garbage. I wouldn't care about characters as much. There is continuation in Star Wars throughout the movies, they are linked. So watching the 7th, without watching the previous 3 or 6 would be damaging to the experience. To me this is the obvious reason why reaction isn't as strong in countries where Star Wars has never been released wide to the public before like China or has been big a thing.

I know there is no convincing you on this @IronJimbo , because you have prior dislike for Star Wars anyway.

I'm sure there are film's that hold nostalgia in China that are well loved. Nostalgia is not necessarily a bad thing.

Have they ever re-released the original Star Wars movies wide in China?

Personally, with more and more Star Wars movies released wide over the coming years, I see reaction and viewer numbers improving in China as Star Wars creates it's own nostalgia in China.

Disney (and FOX, the distribution rights holder of at least one of the old ones) signed in autumn / winter 2015 a contract with a streaming company.

In the first month every movie had to be paid seperatedly, later on it was all incl. with their montly fee.

The per view pay seemed a bit high in relation to the monthly costs, I'll look into that part of the Chinese indutry on summer or so, looks like it could get interesting to follow.

JJ Abrams said it works as a standalone movie so I'm not really sure how true what you're saying is. It wasn't really a sequel to 6 either, the benefits to have seeing Star Wars before basically being able to spot all the "epic" references and homages.

You're underestimating the fandom power, I've seen reviews which basically say "Thing X wasn't so great, thing Y not the best... but it's Star Wars! 9/10".

JJ Abrams can say what he likes, but it's by no means a standalone, it's just the start of a new chapter. Perhaps works more as a standalone in the west where even people who have not seen Star Wars, kind of know about the characters & elements. If you saw the film(TFA) and read the opening title scrawl, it is full of references to characters from the previous 3 films. I mean the first words

Spoiler

Luke Skywalker has gone missing

is instantly a connection to the previous 3.

Nostalgia is important to Star Wars, like it is with many beloved series in different countries. If that connection isn't there in a country with the 7th in a series, then it's sure the dampen the experience. TFA is a well made film, and a huge critical success (94% RT), unlike the prequels which were not, but they were still Star Wars. The nostalgia in those film's didn't blind audiences in the west.
