KP1025
Based on Gavin's tweet, it didn't seem like the censored cut of BR would have good WOM in China. The score is still early though and based off advance screenings (probably skewed towards those most excited to see the film). I'd wait until more ratings are in before deciding if a break-out will happen.
cdsacken
Hell I was ready to accept 135. 152 million would be great. China your box office is crazy but facsinating . 1

I'm happy for theatres that their making money and normally I would agree with this sentiment. If the movie was at least passable. I'd be happy with a break out, but when it is as horrible as Bohemian Rhapsody is, it makes it hard to root for it.
Gavin Feng
CM opening - ¥597M Alita opening - ¥435.5M CM 2nd wknd - ¥160M(-73%) Alita 2nd wknd - ¥161M(-63%) _______________________________________________ 2nd wknd for MCU since 2015 Ultron - ¥174M Ant-Man - ¥140.1M Civil War - ¥208.5M Dr. Strange - ¥154.7M GOTG2 - ¥106.9M Homecoming - ¥98.9M Ragnarok - ¥144.6M Black Panther - ¥76.7M Infinity War - ¥346.8M The Wasp - ¥78.2M I think the most weird thing for MCU legs is the 2nd wknds get "limited" no matter how higher their openings are or how many competition they face. They have no difference(maybe worse) with other import titles after the first 7-day release. For films over ¥2,000M, only Furious 8, Infinity War, Monster Hunt 2 failed to get 2*opening weekend(3-day): 1.98*, 1.88*, 1.86*. ¥1,000-2,000M opened on FRI(about 30 films), only Civil War, Resident Evil 6, TF5 failed to get that: 1.98*, 1.70*, 1.78*. ¥700-1,000M opened on FRI(about 25 films), Apes 3, the Wasp, Ip Man 3, Homecoming, Monkey King 3 under 2.0*. Ragnarok got 2.05*. ¥600-700M opened on FRI(about 17 films), Mummy, BvS, Black Panther, Pacific Rim 2. In other words, no matter how higher MCU titles would earn for lifetime(a billion or two billion or whatever), they always got it in the worst way. 5 2

Djsoke
Those numbers obviously aren't ideal for CM, but after those catastrophic weekdays, it looked like it could be a lot worse.

Green Book down 34% Sunday-to-Sunday. Great news for More Than Blue , also Green Book already surprised me with it's success. Solid performance. 7 hours ago, jc-bartleby said: I seriously hate it with a passion 😄 The entire story is problematic, the male and female protagonists are horrible selfish people who hurt everyone around them in the name of "unconditional" love. When I watched it, I just kept think WTF?!!! Anyway, the marketing company did a lot, and did well too. They had lots of actors and KOLs (one of them is Hu Ge, the Chinese actor who has 60m followers on Weibo) Without going into spoilers, it wouldn't be the first or last movie where innocent bystanders are hurt in the name of love. I'm not denying that it had a good marketing strategy, however if the film didn't live up to that hype then it wouldn't have built up momentum over time, requiring more and more screens, since the first release day. It wouldn't increase from Saturday to Sunday and still be going strongly if the majority of people were walking out disappointed. I think possibly your hate for the movie is clouding your judgement lol. This isn't the type of movie where people watch again and again, it's not even a movie people will say is their favourite because of how sad it is . But it serves a purpose and does it's job well for those that want a tearjerker (which is what it was marketed as). I mean the tagline is basically 'Bring a box of tissues for your tears' lol. 6 hours ago, MrGlass2 said: More Than Blue counter-programming Captain Marvel. Actually, yes! I know how CM was talked about in the West but in Asia it was just another Marvel movie for the general movie audience. I didn't see much of a push to attract the female audience in Asia. Whereas More Than Blue is clearly a love story targeted at women and couples. Plus, CM is still action/sci fi focused compared to More Than Blue's slow paced drama which is another way to set it apart.

I understand what you mean, but this film is crazily overperforming. Just read some sort of analysis about its box office, and some people said Douyin (Tik-tok) plays a big part in the marketing. Basically it's now super popular in Douyin (which targets younger audience I think), and people likens it to EX3, which also did a great job in Douyin marketing, but has a rather low score in Douban, and extremely good box office). China is indeed a weird market to understand, I can understand those films with strong nationalistic appeal doing extremely well, but this is seriously WOW! (and that is with just 37% of showings) I just read some news about its release back in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese people are amazed/shocked by its success, as Dear Ex which was released slightly earlier that month, but did not have such crazy hype, even the reviews were generally more positive than More Than Blues. Then the director of MTB talked about how they set the target audience as teenage girls and college girls and organized two preview screenings with only teen girls and college girls. All teen girls gave really positive review and half of the college girls thought the film was great. Then via these teen girls who eagerly shares the film in social media, and leads to great hype and therefore wonderful box office. 1
