Didn't expect AM2 to do less than AIW legs going by the difference in opening numbers. AIW's 1.88x was very good after those previews and ow. AM2 did show a huge bump from AM1's ow and 840 odd / $122-123 total is great compared to other 'solo' CBMs.

IW had almost no competition for nearly 4 weeks. AM2 had a 150m grosses opening in the 2nd weekend itself. Im sure if AM2 did not have MI6 opening so soon after then it would have had a good multiplier.

Interesting that it's going to do a bit under 1/3rd of AIWs gross in China and the U.S.  Different roads - same destination.

MI6 heading to low 70s -20%

218m 2nd W/E -59%

300m 2nd week incoming

1022m total next thursday

it should hold -60% for the following two weeks with little competition and keep screens thru Saturday the 29th. Holidays releases start on the 30th

3rd week 120m

4th week  48m

last 2 days 10m

MI6 should be close to 1200m/$175m    2.26x OW

Meg was extended and should crawl to 1050m/$153m.   3.01x OW! only had 22% of shows causing less frontload IMO.  WoM helped too

AM2 going to finish 845m/$123m  1.82x OW  Small OWm due to MI6 in its 2nd weekend and 142k shows allow the fanbase to frontload.

Regardless, it still reached the top end of single SH movies, the ranging being 600-800m for three years, impressive.

FF franchise and its actors, Rock, Vinny and Statham, along with Cruise continue to rule over SH's here

Maybe they should make Furious Mission 10.7.  4b BO easily!

MEG will cross 3.0x multi both China AND Dom

(Dom will be close to 3.1x)

that tends to happen when a movie is actually good. A lot of people were pleasantly surprised.

All 4 play superheroes in their franchises , they are just not called SH but they literally are SH.

https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/kmdTMyiInjJ51hxWaMH8aA Anyone know when this will go into effect?

I've talked something about this in the begin of the year. They limited it months ago and now ban it.

A common distribution strategy was limited by studios themselves for making the market competition in CNY be more fair.

According to local news, the ticket price subsidy, a common distribution strategy in China, has been limited by local studios themselves. Those distributors made the rules that the actual price(how much audience actually pay) of movies opening on CNY can't be less than ¥19.9. And the numbers of tickets subsidized by studios must be less than 500K.

For example, the lowest 2D ticket price between distributors & theaters chain is usually ¥25 in the 1st tier cities(¥20 in 2nd & 3rd tier. ¥5 more for 3D movies). If someone only pay ¥9.9 for a 2D movie ticket in Beijing, distributors need give theater another ¥15.1.

Ticket price subsidy has been popular for 4-5 years. It's an significant way to stimulate incremental demand especially in 2nd & 3rd tier cities, where many people in 1st tier cities will return in CNY holidays. But the strategy was also criticized by many insiders and industry workers that it made some useless movies hold overmuch showtimes(and this really hurt those movies’ box office which already opened).

And there is a fun fact: Disney is the only studio which don’t adopt the strategy. I think one of the reason that they decided to push The Last Jedi back to Jan 2018 is avoiding those local movies which embraced ticket price subsidy. It really can kill the showtimes of TLJ on 2nd weekend(well, it seems no difference whether SW debut on Dec or Jan.)

The performance of movies like Operation Red Sea, Detective Chinatown 2, Monster Hunt 2 in CNY showed that the limitation of ticket price subsidy(票补) didn't hurt the box office. So film bureau ordered local distributors & ticket sale company(Maoyan & Taopiaopiao) to stop selling ¥9.9 tickets. The floor price became ¥19.9 after CNY. Also movies like Dying to Survive, Hello Mr. Billionaire, The Island, Meg did great this summer. Maybe film bureau think it's time for Chinese film market to stop price war to attract consumers. ¥19.9 or any tickets under ¥25 will disappear after this month.

Sometimes a film with low buzz could get overmuch showtimes because of too many ticket price subsidy in the past few years. This phenomenon may be ended soon. China will return to the era of traditional distribution. How many showtimes a movie can get will be more about the pre-sale number & buzz itself in the future.

It's controversial that if it's really a good news for Chinese film market. Some analysts think it's still too early for audience in 2nd/3rd tier cities to ban this strategy. They still don't form a habit of watching films in cinema. They just went theaters for low price tickets.

One thing is certain: the biggest winner is Disney, which never used this strategy. Universal also don't like it.
