Films
I'm not following this race too much but I'm guessing this is going to come down between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity?I'd say yes, 12YAS is the big favourite though gravity and American hustle are not beng ruled out
lilmac
Any chance Mandela gets nominated for Best Picture or Best Actor? I haven't seen the film but it's what I consider Oscar bait AND the unfortunate timing may play in its favor....

Leyla
hope Saving Mr. Banks does get a best picture nod. ^ this & I still blindly hope that rush gets in by some miracle
ChD
^ this & I still blindly hope that rush gets in by some miracle Whilst it's not popular amongst General Audience (as we do), it is very popular among critics and the fact that it got voted for Golden Globes might also help it. I say we can expect seeing it there.
TLK
Anyone else think Harvey made a big mistake by releasing his strongest movie Fruitvale Station so early on in the season? This is the sort of movie that could've gotten some awards traction if it was released in October/November. I think TWC over-estimated the strength of their awards slate. They have a lot of movies this year but nothing that truly stands out. Edited January 1, 2014 by TLK

They have a lot of movies this year but nothing that truly stands out. Can't really blame them. Philomena, Mandela, and August seemed like the more obvious Oscar bait at the beginning of the year. And no one knew who Ryan Coogler was. Edited January 1, 2014 by tribefan695
forg
Isn't The Butler, TWC's main Oscar movie? It still has the best shot of all TWC nominees for BP nod
CoolioD1
PGA nominees today. Should give us some idea. Personally I'm thinking Philomena is weinstein's best shot at a picture nod right now.
GiantCALBears
Gravity will fall back just like Avatar did, I see American Hustle pulling a The Departed & shocking 12 Years a Slave. Anyone else with me?
CoolioD1
No, at least I hope not anyway.

Well, PGA completely snubbed Harvey this year. His awards slate just isn't very good this year but yeah it is stupid to count him out so early in the season. eXtacy
A lot of my friends disliked Gravity and mocked me loving it, so I hope it wins best picture so I can shove it in their face.

I hope so. It's the best of those three and I don't think any of them are that great.
eXtacy
If American Hustle wins best picture, I will never take the Oscars seriously again.

ToddThatcher
here's my latest round of predictions for the six top categories. taking sm banks out and putting db club in. also taking Scorsese out and putting in Spike Jonze, among other changes. Still having tough time deciding which actor gets left out in lead http://toddmthatcher.com/2014/01/04/2014-oscar-predictions-todds-picks-for-early-january/
