  4. Almost finished the second season. SO GOOD!
  5. Weekend update: 'Interstellar''s second weekend looks busy. The only IMAX here accounted for approximately 10% of last weekend's admissions and this weekend it is crowded to the max. The 3 remaining shows today are sold out. The 4 shows tomorrow are also close to selling out and the next week till Thursday (that is how far in advance the booking stretches) also has shows between 30-80% full already. We won't get any results till Monday afternoon, but I expect a good drop for 'Interstellar', much better than the one for other movies with similar OW. Also, 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1' finally sold out it's Wednesday night screening. It was about damn time, considering it a has a pre existing fan base and that show has 1/3 of the seats an IMAX show for Interstellar has.
  6. Well, it's better than Gravity's first Tuesday. That made 6.6M and it's Monday was bigger than Interstellar's.
  7. Interstellar November 12, Tuesday, 3:45 PM IMAX, 80% full Trailers: Fury - weird choice since it's in theatres for 3 weeks already Jupiter Ascending - the new trailer - a lot of whispers at this one and a few 'wow's at some scenes; also, the whole theatre burst out laughing at the 'I love dogs' joke. Audience: mainly young people and a few older ones as well; pretty mixed; good reaction, a lot of laughs at the appropriate moments; also heard people crying, including the girl I was with; stunned silence at the end of the movie for about half a minute and heavy talk afterwards. Movie: best of the year. More in the review thread.
  8. Warner Bros! They are far and away the best studio out there when it comes to marketing. Plus, as a filmmaker, I'd make SF and they seem to be the only ones that are still interested in that.
  9. Interstellar - 10/10 Inception - 9.5/10 The Dark Knight Rises - 9/10 The Dark Knight - 8.5/10 Batman Begins - 8/10 Haven't seen the rest.
  10. This movie... I have so many things I want to say about it and I feel like I won't be able to put them all down. It was more than a movie, it was a mind-bending, trascendent experience. You can have your laugh, but it feels like life changing for me. I'll explain in a bit, but first, let's get through technicalities. I liked the first act more than I thought I would from the reviews. It was a perfect setting, atmospheric, gritty. The acting was obviously top notch, even the little girl from Twilight. The second act was edge of the seat great and the soundtrack helped a lot. Zimmer made an excellent work. The black hole scene... it is the most stunning thing I've ever seen in cinema. I literary stopped breathing. I read some comms about the fact that the way the universe was depicted is colorless and vapid; I couldn't disagree more; it's realism and grittiness were what made everything feel so relatable). The third act is the one that had the biggest impact on me. The way it flows, bringing you to the conclusion that we are so small in this universe, just for proving you afterwards how wrong you are (and then, at the end, merging these two ideas together). It boggles the mind. My IMAX show was packed and the audience really seemed to enjoy it. They laughed at every joke (and a big thing about this is that despite the realistic, somehow hopless atmosphere of the movie, the humor did not feel forced, like it is in so many other movies). Also, after the credits started rolling and the lights lit, it about half a minute where people just starred at the screen, in complete silence, and then everyone started talking at once. I never heard a director's name so many times after a movie. The girl I went with didn't see any trailers for Interestellar and had no idea what it was about. The film was introduced by Christopher Nolan, at which she asked me who's the guy. I told her he's the director of Inception. After it was over, I was surprised when she told me than she didn't think it would be possible to love Interstellar more than Inception, but she did. And she's no moviebuff. And people where so passionate talking about it. Now, for my part, it made me realize that I'm 20 and, despite the general way of thinking that you couldn't make anything big at this age, I know that 1/3-1/4 of my life is already gone and looking to the future, I see more clear than ever that even if everything I plan works out, if would still be for nothing, because we are so small in our universe. That's the beautiful part of watching movies: the fact that, at some point you'll see something like Interstellar, something that shades light upon your way of thinking and understanding the world. It definitely made me wanna do everything in my power so I accomplish something in my life. Not just a social status (that I perceived to be so important till recently), but something to be remembered for. And not just talking about it, but acting, because I see how short our existence is. I'm gonna stop because I think I've already made some people laugh, but I simply cannot comprehend how someone could see this movie as pretentious or bad. Maybe I'll be perceived as a Nolanite (even though I haven't seen anything outside of TDK trilogy and Inception), but this is as close to perfection as filmmaking can be. I may not of had Inception's action, but it's scope, it's grandeur passed that movie in every possible way. Interstellar was for sure the best experience I had in theatre for a few years now and definitely Top 3 all-time material for me. A+
  11. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE Thanks to a massive debut from 'Interstellar' and a nice job from the holdovers, we had an excellent weekend. - With great marketing campaign, Interstellar opened to an incredible 58.500 admissions (and $ 320K) this weekend. That's the fourth highest OW of the year, behind '300: Rise of an Empire', 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and 'Noah'. 'Interstellar' almost doubled 'Gravity''s OW (32.000 adm) and was way ahead of 'Inception' (34.500 adm). In fact, it's director Christopher Nolan's highest opener here, ahead of the 56.700 tickets sold by 'The Dark Knight Rises' back in 2012. In terms of USD, 'Gravity' ended up with 1.24M, 'Inception' with 1.22M and 'The Dark Knight Rises' - 1.01M, grosses that 'Interstellar' should exceed in the end. If 'Exodus' doesn't have a 'Noah' type of run, Nolan's epic is locked for Top 5 for the year. - In second, John Wick had a beautiful 32% drop. It's total now stands at a healthy 372K and an ending in the 650K area should be a done deal. - Fury was down 43%. After three weekends, it's at 416K and headed for at least 600K. - The Boxtrolls was down 41% in it's second outing. A pretty steap steep drop all things considered. Gross stands at 155K. - The comedy The Stag opened to an expected (but still disappointing) 7.774 admissions from 31 screens. - Dracula Untold slides a good 39% this weekend and reaches $ 1.038.000 and over 200.000 admissions (4th most attended movie of the year). It also enters in the Top 10 for the year at No. 10. - The House of Magic proves once again it's a little phenomenon. In it's 13th consecutive weekend in Top 10, the animated hit increased a huge 39% and reached 123.000 adm and 614K. If it continues to hold well, 700K+ is in the cards. One thing is certain: it will soon pass 'The Pirate Fairy' to become the second highest grossing animation of 2014 (behind only 'How To Train Your Dragon 2') and it will finish the year in Top 3 ('The Penguins of Madagascar' will likely take the 1st spot). - Gone Girl had another light drop (32%). It reached 442K and 500K seems like a lock. - Annabelle collapsed after Halloween. With 326K in the bank, passing 400K might prove difficult. Still, a great result for a horror movie. - The local film Cuscrii closes the Top, easing 33%. It now passed 100K, a good result for the dead local market. - Outside Top 10, Stations of the Cross opened to an awful 1.089 adm from 25 screens. - Also outside of the top, Guardians of the Galaxy reaches 185.000 adm and 1.1M, becoming No. 6 for the year, ahead of 'Pompeii'. It has a chance of passing 'Maleficent' (currently No. 5), before 'Dracula Untold' and 'Interstellar' pass it in a few weeks. Top 10: Next week's openers: - Magic in the Moonlight - Northmen: A Viking Saga - Qu'est-ce qu-on a fait au Bon Dieu? - The Good Lie - Eliza Graves Woody Allen was never big here. 'A Midnight in Paris' opened with a bit over 10.000 admissions, 'From Rome with Love' opened with around 8.000 adm and last year's 'Blue Jasmine' with 4.000. So 'Magic in the Monlight' shoud do around 5.000. 'Northmen: A Viking Saga' will have a pretty limited release, which is a shame since this is the type of movie (historical epic) that this market loves. Even with a weak marketing push, it still has a sellout show already. But given it's limited release, it will be hard for it to break out. 'Qu'est-ce qu-on a fait au Bon Dieu?' will have 'Interstellar' as a main contender for the adult audience and that one already has a lot of sellouts for this week, so expect weak numbers. The last two movies will likely flop too.
  12. 4th biggest OW of 2014 here too. And much stronger OW than Inception or Gravity.
  13. Well, Paramount has the DVD/Bluray sales in US right? They won't lose money. And honestly, this probably means Nolan will go back working for WB which is smth I want. They are the best when it comes to marketing and I'm 100% sure WB will hand Nolan another big budget if he asks for it.
  14. Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $83,530,000 34.2% + Foreign: $160,500,000 65.8% = Worldwide: $244,030,000
  15. Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $54,884,000 27.1% + Foreign: $147,700,000 72.9% = Worldwide: $202,584,000 Nice
  16. Pretty good start OS. Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $56,200,000 71.0% + Foreign: $23,000,000 29.0% = Worldwide: $79,200,000
  17. That is actually very resonable. I wasn't a big fan of the first movie, but I think this one will do a bit more than you predicted, especially in China.
  18. Tickets went on sale for a few days now. The movie will open 21 Nov. here. It is ok for now. No sellouts, not even for the Thursday night previews, but some shows on Friday and Saturday evening are about 20% full. It is quite behind Interstellar through the same point which is surprising, given that THG has a built in fanbase. Still, Interstellar has IMAX on it's side and that's a huge plus. We'll see what it does this weekend and I'll try to make a prediction for MJ accordingly. The last one opened above 50.000 admissions, doubling the first THG, but finished with a total of a bit over 150.000 adm. Those are poor legs. MJ1 will open above that but it will depend on how much of it's audience Interstellar will take. It has 4 weeks to make money, before The Hobbit totally kills it. But it has strong competition even before that (Horrible Bosses 2, Penguins of Madagascar and especially Exodus - religious themed epics are always hits here - Noah is currently the 3rd biggest movie of the year). Overall, there's a small chance MJ1 finishes with less money than the last one if it's OW is not big enough.
