Thurs Numbers RTH: Purge 3.4 midnights/early

Recommended Posts

The Purge user rating on rottentomatoes: 59%, 3.3/5, 25K votes

for comparison:

NYSM - 75%, 3.9/5, 48K votes

After Earth - 49%, 3.1, 57K votes

Internship - 74%, 3.7, 26K votes

F&F6 - 87%, 4.3, 116K votes

Hangover 3 - 50%, 3.3, 75K votes

STID - 92%, 4.3, 141K votes

Gatsby - 72%, 3.8, 95K votes

Based on these numbers, and apparent twitter reaction, it looks like The Purge isn't exactly going to have great WOM.

Horror movies generally gets toxic WOM and D,E,F cinemascores..

I guess it's possible, but I'm thinking more along the lines of $16m for now. Maybe a bit less. This is horror's first test with 10pm shows in summertime so I'd rather stay conservative for Friday actual.

This is pretty much the very beginning of post-Aurora summertime regular 10pm preview shows.

so it wasnt just a period of time then :)

really wondering about its total

Let's be careful when we call NYSM "smaller" as it still had a $75 million production cost and a stacked cast that includes one of the principal actors in The Avengers.

imo in this age of sequels/prequels & comic book movies ppl just usually call films with even slightly original premise small :) + it def wasn't on many lists like of 'the most anticipated films of 2013' etc etc. Even a month ago I saw plenty of tweets saying 'Who wants to watch that magician movie nysm??? No one? OK :) '

'The Purge' even had bigger buzz & anticipation months before

John Carter was great but sinking 300 mill into an original property is just fucking moronic.

If everyone thought that way, Avatar would not have been made...

impressive

Re: NYSM. It is pretty good but PRESTIGE is still king as far as twisty mind-f*ck movies are concerned.

The twist in NYSM is not as dramatic, mind-blowing, so-simple-it's-awesome as the one in THE PRESTIGE.

The best thing in the movie is a fight sequence with one of the Horsemen, reminds me a lot of

Jackie Chan at his most creative. Why is this successful? People are just tired of seeing another

building gets blown up, another ship falling from the sky. And, o yeah:

2,925 Locations

Now onto 3000+ !

it already made back its budget (the official one obv)

I loved the Prestige but I was rooting for Jackman so the end pissed me off

Can't really compare nysm to it at all. Different tone. nysm is just mindless fun (wish it had more humor though) Prestige is a thriller.

Melanie is gorgeous :cloud9:

smart move to build the hype so it can gross to its full potential the 1st wkend then it can die & still end up pretty successful

tiny budget helps too :)

James Cameron can write his own check...very big difference between James and most others.
