I agree that they needed to ramp up the female aspect in the trailers, but I bet that the "geniuses" at the marketing department were a tad scared of the fact that the female lead was not a white woman. Hollywood still has this weird idea that white people might not want to see a movie if its leads are not white (or black, unless it's Will or Denzel).

Not to mention, she's actually presented as a person with hopes, dreams, and goals, not merely eye-candy or with the sole purpose of finding love and romance.

Just looked at the weekend numbers, and DM2 really destroyed the leggy run that "Monsters University" was looking to have. I don't think Disney-Pixar expected one movie to hit them badly on two fronts at the box office (TLR and MU have both suffered)

a lot of movies had  their runs hindered this summer due to competition I think.

just showing the female character in a movie isn't enough to attract interest from women. The blockbuster with the highest female ratio this summer is World War Z (actually White House Down also slightly skewed women) and they didn't feature any high profile female characters. Some films just appeal more to males I guess and this is one of them.

Well I don't know. As a female I'm tired of seeing females only as low interests in action movies and if she was showed more as a main character I'm pretty sure I would have been more excited to see it. Females are really underserved in films.

True, can't believe the stacked June we had this time. MoS, MU, WWZ, WHD, TLR could have all done way better if they had breathing room. I think we may start seeing April host more big movies in a year or two since currently April is a dumping ground before the summer movie season.

like I said, WWZ and White House Down skewed female (actually had higher female turnout than male) and didn't feature any major female characters so why couldn't PR do the same (not get more females but get a higher turnout) I don't think that just showing more of the female character would be enough.

problem with April is that there are usually no holidays to take advantage of and also opening right before some of the major summer players in May which can eat into you. Next year Easter falls in April giving an advantage to releasing in April next year but other than that there isn't really

I don't even know who you are anymore.

I was a disparaging anti-Spielberg hipster before it became commonplace! (true story: I was mostly bored and/or confused the first time I saw E.T. and basically just wanted the movie to be over. And as E.T. Is finally leaving, I said sarcastically "oh watch, I bet it'll make a stupid little shooting star". And it did!)Of course, I loved all the other Spielberg-related shit I saw.... :lol:But not THE GOONIES.
