I don't know, MU and DM2 seemed to hurt MOS plenty. It's true that they were follow-ups to well-loved properties, which Big Hero 6 is not, but MOS was Superman. I could see BH6 having the same effect on Interstellar, especially with the Marvel connection. I mean, the marketing blurb just writes itself. "If your kids liked the Avengers, they'll love Big Hero 6!"

Welcome to the forums!

I have to disagree on the comparison here, though. MoS, as a superhero movie, naturally targeted more younger audiences than Interstellar will. The crossover appeal between MoS and MU/DM2 was bigger than it will be for Interstellar and BH6. It's more like counter-programming in the vein of Skyfall/Wreck-It Ralph.

It seems like in todays world 70 mill is a smallish budget. Sad but true.

We live in an age where studios would rather spend 200 million to make 800 than spend 50 to make 200. After this summer though- the breakout hits were modestly budgeted for the most part and the big bombs cost over 130- I think we might be seeing more demographic-specific blockbusters made over generic 4-quad films aimed at everyone and no one (RIPD, Lone Ranger, etc).

Dreamworks produced the first two, and I think it's Paramount going forward. I think.

That's more or less right. Dreamworks had the movie rights to the franchise, then Paramount bought Dreamworks shortly before the first film went into production. Part two was produced by Dreamworks as an arm of Paramount, but DW split from Paramount shortly before it came out. Paramount held onto the movie rights and produced the third one without DW.

WB and Paramount made an exclusive IMAX deal. Who knows if MJ1 will have an IMAX opening to begin with?

That is a valid question. The IMAX website does not list a Hunger Games movie on there for November 2014. Someone mentioned in this thread that Mockingjay will have IMAX footage, but has that even been confirmed? Just because Catching Fire will have it doesn't mean the next film will also have it. TF3 didn't have IMAX footage even though TF2 had it.
