Weekend Estimates: Elysium 30.5M; Millers 26.55M; Planes 22.53M; Percy Jackson 14.6M Pg 29

As Rich said yesterday, sci fi fatigue is in full effect. Nobosy (except rainbowtrout, no suprise) is skipping Elyaium because of its message. People are skipping it because its like the hundreth fucking sci fi movie this year.

Wrong.

People are skipping Elysium because from Day 1 the trailer and commercials have not had big appeal with the GA. There are no big money shots in the trailers, the action all looks very grounded and real/gritty, and the fate of the universe doesn't appear to be at stake.

Turbo had a pitiful run for DWA. It may be their lowest attended release since Sinbad ten summers ago. Millers is really the only 'winner' of the weekend. Planes will make Disney money but even that's going to perform under tracking.

So basically not enough people are going to see it because it doesn't look stupid?

People are just tired of sci-fi/action after being inundated with it for two months. That's pretty evident considering the string of underwhelming and/or disastrous performers since MoS & WWZ opened in June. Elysium can be added to the list which now includes White House Down, The Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim, RIPD, Red 2, The Wolverine, and 2 Guns. There's a very clear trend here.

2 Guns had a modest opening weekend and a modest budget unlike the others on that list.

The Wolverine did nothing spectacular either, but its budget wasn't very high.

Also how can people be tired of Sci-Fi movies when there wasn’t a single original Scif Fi this year that actually hit it big (MOS doesn’t count)?

Hmm well the Conjuring got a solid "B" from me... You should check it out! :)

alas i don't do horror films exception zombie films (i love me a good zombie movie)

i got terrible nightmares for days when i was younger, then a few yrs back i felt adventurous and figured i'm old enough now and watched the exorcism of emily rose on tv during the day ,  lo and behold i had nightmares all week

needless to say it refreshed my memory as to why i stayed away from these type of films

I'm not talking about profitability, though. Both 2 Guns and Wolverine opened fairly low given their credentials. My main point is that all of these live action movies are failing to break out because of extremely satiated audience demand. It's a good thing the market has been as strong as it has this summer, otherwise these movies would probably be doing even less than they have.
