Terrific film. A!

They did a great job portraying the racing scene and catching the atmosphere, complete with 70s cameras and colours. Me and my ladyfriend were kids back then, and we spent those Sunday afternoons glued to the TV whenever there was a F1 race on, so this was a really nostalgic trip too - but the cameras are so much nearer to the cars here, you're inside the action and the angry engine sounds out of a theater PA system really make all the difference - there are moments of pure adrenaline bliss here. It's been a long, long time since I've watched any car race on tv but for my taste, they could have included even more race scenes, they were that good.

All the adrenaline can't save a movie if you don't care, but in "Rush", we do. Both leads are excellent; of course Brühl as Lauda has the meatier and more dramatic role and more screentime but Hemsworth did a great job, too. Supporting roles are also good, with special nods to Alexandra Maria Lara as Niki's wife Marlene. There's a 50 minute doc available on youtube about the Hunt/Lauda rivalry and the 76 championship where you can see a bit of real-life Marlene and she really nailed it. What I missed were a few more of the legendary 70s drivers, only Regazzoni has a speaking part, most others only get a few background seconds.

I liked Hans Zimmer's music, sometimes he's too foreground for my taste but in "Rush", he keeps it subtle.

The real-life story gets a bit condensed for the screen and writer Morgan / director Howard often use a rather coarse brush to paint their characters, but that really doesn't lessen the enjoyment. Highly recommended!

yesterday I met my fav movie of the year  & that was 'Rush'

what a balanced well acted, well directed & well filmed movie!

We're not forced or manipulated to feel one way or another (helloooo Gravity ), no manipulation whatsoever! Both men  portrayed very sympathetically & the end made me wish that there was more bonding shown.

really at a loss abt the status of actors

They're SO both leads

Hemsy is amazing as Hunt & Bruhl as well in the role of Lauda. & how much they resemble the real life sportsmen its incredible!

Cinematography & editing is outstanding. Please get those noms!

& I havent expected it to have so much humour & joy for life & it all feels very genuine. No scenes of fake & in your face 'ZOMG ACTING!'

bonus points is my sister liked it very much too & the movie made for a great bonding event & discussion afterwards  :)

the rare occasion when I want to just put an A+

Fantastic film with great performances, especially from the two leads. RIP Sean Edwards. He played his father in the film. He was the driver who rescued Niki Lauda from his burning vehicle. He was a passenger in a Porsche 966 that crashed during a private test at Queensland Raceway last Tuesday.

I just finished watching this movie. Been waiting for it for quite some time, and I have to say I'm not disappointed. This movie was by far the best one I've seen this year, a spot formerly possessed by Captain Phillips. The racing sequences were simply brilliant and worked really well with Zimmer's score, even though, I know some of you will comment on this saying that this score was just a meh one and it was un autopilot, the score matched every scene of this movie freaking perfectly. You could feel the adrenaline rush in the scene where Niki accelerates that car when he was picked up by those two Italian guys.

The cinematography was great, but I had some problems with some of the effects. Sometimes, It was too obvious that they were effects just from how the cars drifted and crashed. The ending wasn't quite as emotional as I expected, and I was disappointed that the movie never really explored the part where Nikki and James were actually friends. They were always enemies and then in the end I find out that they were somewhat friends (From the voice over, none the less).

As I said, I wasn't disappointed. Top movie by far. Deserves a lot of nominations and wins at the Oscars far above more hyped movies that are currently out (Wolf/Phillips/Gravity/etc)

I had no problems with the effects, in fact it looked just like 70s footage and they used actual cars.

There was that drifting crash when Lauda and Hunt collided, earlier, when they were in Formula 3. That's the only crash that looked like they used special effects simply because of how the cars spun and stopped..

The movie got better with Lauder was introduced.

Anyone familiar with racing knows the epic rivalry..

In the end I liked Lauder character more, because that is what I am more like.

The film it self has a great story but I find the racing scenes rather flat.

This is a film that is somewhat hard for me to review.

First things first, the actual story at hand here is fantastic.  I'm by no means a racing fan, but I was invested here.  In fact, the underlying story picks up the film on more than one occasion.  Every time I felt myself getting disinterested, the story tended to have a big event occur and things would pick up.

Hemsworth and Bruhl are both serviceable in their roles, but it is Bruhl who seems to carry the film in stretches.  It does seem like at times things are simply glossed over (Hunt's descent into alcoholism and the falling out with his wife is handled very poory), but in the end this film doesn't really ask much of the viewer except to be entertained.

In the end, I enjoyed this because I felt enough was done to feel invested and care about a rivalry in a sport I generally don't give a rat's ass about.  It's a fine-tuned mainstream Ron Howard drama, and there's nothing wrong with that.

What I liked most is that the film presents two rivals with very distinct ideologies and doesn't ask the viewer to pick sides but rather explore the successes and tragedies these men faced.

This is what I liked most about Rush, the rivalry is never showed in a manichaean way, there's no good/bad or right/wrong dicotomy.

Lauda is the hard working guy, he's conscious about rules and may stop working when he reaches his limits, but will always come back to finish what he started. Hunt follows his heart and will go beyond limits to feel fully alive. But both of them are driven by the same instinct: they recognize their vocations and won't let their families concept of "successful career" obliterate their talents, they know what they are good at and what makes their heart race. You may identify yourself more with one or another, but they both have their virtues and their differences only serves to inspire each other.

Dedicating this movie to both of them only enhances this, picturing any of them as more of a hero than the other would ruin everything.

Great movie. Bruhl was a revelation. And Hemsworth showed he's going to have a career beyond Marvel movies. Nothing will top Apollo 13 as Ron Howard's best film, but this is easily number 2. A

Saw it for the first time since 2013. It didn't hold up well.

I still think the script is fantastic, showing two sides without taking sides, without judging them. Rivalry is portrayed in the most refreshing way in years.

Rush falters in its execution, Ron Howard just isn't a good crafter, his artistic choices don't pay off for the most part. What could have been something great is just okay because of him. The last race and the ending tries really hard to make you forget that.

Technically, I hated how the movie was framed, felt very claustrophobic; blending material shot with high-end and low-end digital cameras + a schizophrenic color grading was very off-putting; and the frantic editing also didn't please.

To be honest, Zimmer's score and the performances does all the heavy lifting here.
