So 2013 will pass 2009 for most 100m grossing films. Anchorman makes 32 to tie it, and American Hustle is bound to get there, especially with an Oscar bump. WOWS possibly 100m grosser as well -- depends on what WOM does and Oscar bump.

Not the accomplishment it once could be given inflation/3D but as I don't want to open that box, let's just say it's been a pretty stellar year at the box office. 13 films over 200m once The Hobbit 2 passes in a few days. Wow!

the comparable weekend for Avatar it looked like most movies dropped. Here Hobbit is one of the few movies that decreased

How many movies of them came from a 31 million weekend? It is not the same to increase from 10 than from 30

Very solid year

13 movies over 200

8 of those over 250 (obviously  Frozen and DoS will get there)

4 of those over 300 (again, counting Frozen)

If Frozen hits 350 (really good odds now) all 4 will also be over 350

2 of those over 400 (CF is locked).

Adjusted for Tele  :)

                3 The Sixth Sense BV $36,283,600 7.8% 2,775 $13,075 $463,512,000 8/6/99

It is still shocking how well "The Sixth Sense" did. I think it was among the top 10 earners of all time when it ended its run.

Looking through the BOM article archive makes it clear how out of left field the movie was, some quotes:

The Sixth Sense has an ad campaign conspicuously lacking in the "money shots" usually employed to sell thrillers and any movie starring Bruce Willis, though I haven't seen the trailer. It just seems rather late to the horror party. It also seems like it would have been better suited as a Fall release.

Audiences turned their attention to The Sixth Sense, in yet another unprecedented weekend. The Bruce Willisstarrer made a stunning $26.7 million from just 2,161 theaters, breaking the August opening record previously held by The Fugitive's $23.8 million. This must be considered one of the true sleepers of the summer. It practically came out of nowhere. Here's a picture that was just recently and abruptly added to the summer schedule, that opened in a crowded market place and amidst a plethora of other horror pictures, yet it took the nation by storm. Sure, it had a big star, but Willis is a wild card in non-action roles. I didn't see the trailer, but the ads didn't seem that appealing. Atmospheric, yes, but devoid of the "money shots" used to lure audiences. One of them said something like "Four words will change everything" Then it cut to the kid saying "I see dead people." Uh, okay. Whatever. Don't get me wrong though. It's nice to see audiences going for a movie that resembles a movie rather than a video game.

The Sixth Sense continued its extraordinary run. It grossed $25.8 million, down just 3% from last weekend after a slight expansion. Who'd have ever thought a Bruce Willis picture could perform like this? This is the real sleeper success of the summer. It came out of nowhere, and, unlike The Blair Witch Project, it is well liked.

Also, it gave us this to make fun of for all time
