I thought the budget for an Avatar trilogy would be more then 415m!? The hobbit trilogy cost more did it not?

this is not production budget. this is what production must spent in NZ to get 25 percent refund.

From the article it sounded like the entire trilogy will be done in NZ.

The key phrase from the Hollywood Reporter article: "spending of at least $412 million on production activity in New Zealand." As dezorz already pointed out, that generous 25% rebate depends on them spending $412m in New Zealand. It doesn't mean the budget will be $412m or anywhere near it, just that it won't be less.

415 dollar budget sounds ridiculously low for three films of this caliber. You can't get a better deal than that, I wonder if its a lot higher than its being reported but the studio just wants to be modest.

James Cameron Talks Avatar Sequels, Compares Them to The Godfather

 

No matter his intentions, he just invoked the name "The Godfather", which invites comparisons. He's not doing himself or the films any favors. Avatar was an "immersive" 3D experience. That does not make it on the level of some of the best films ever made, sorry, Mr. King O' the World. It was as derivative as it was original. And, for me at least, ultimately forgettable. I'm thinking a big chunk of people have moved on as the movie just didn't seem to invite sequels. For example, my wife loved it so much she saw it multiple times in theaters...without me(that has only happened with Twilight and chick-flicks), but when I told her about the sequels, she was rather ho-hum about it.

How many movies tell the story of one family centric spanning over several entries as a saga?

 

People would be less riled up if he invoked Cheaper by the Dozen reference?

 

He just explains how the movies layout will be centered around a family just like Godfather was centered around Corleone's family, nothing more, nothing less.(He could have said Skywalkers, Atreides and so on) There's nothing in there that said Cameron thinks Avatar is Godfather's quality material but people are desperate to jump at his throat whenever they got an occasion to say how badly Avatar sucked.

Lightstorm has a major mo-cap stage/facility in Marina del Ray, that's for sure.
