If I'm Iger, I'm considering the animated slate next year to be a top priority for the marketing department. Those 2023 films are write offs. He needs to slash animation budgets and outsource those movies overseas like Dreamworks and Illumination. A $90m cartoon with a different art-style looks just as nice as the ultra high detailed toons Disney put out.

They might be able to salvage something with Wish, but I definitely think Elemental is going to fall flat on its face and be Pixar's next Good Dinosaur. The Disney animation house needs a creative refresh, especially after Spider-Verse, Bad Guys and Puss in Boots 2. Pixar does seem to be heading in that direction already. And to be fair, The Good Dinosaur had a very troubled history before Sohn was attached. Elemental was his idea from the ground up. So we'll see how that turns out. Though they should still consider bringing the budgets down on these projects.

Every Dreamworks and Illumination movie this year was available online through PVOD with accompanying Ad campaigns only 2-3 weeks after release. Puss in Boots is January 17th. The Bad Guys was online on the US release date (but that's more of a piracy issue). Universals Toons also hit SVOD roughly 45 days after release (it took Lightyear 47 days before Disney+). The Disney toons this year took far longer to watch at home. I don't think the windows are an issue at all.
JWR
Encanto had the reception, but was working against in an environment where kids and family weren't fully vaccinated. Lightyear had a confusing marketing campaign on top of so-so reviews and tepid word of mouth. Strange World seemed DOA early on. So while Elemental certainly has a lot of factors working against it, jury is still out on whether or not it's doomed to fail. But it needs a more active marketing campaign and stronger word of mouth to have any chance.

Disney has trained its auds to expect their movies to be just streaming titles and not theater events anymore.

And with a June as packed as that in 2023, would families choose it over the other titles knowing it will be available in Disney+ very soon? That depends on whether or not Disney adjusts their theatrical window.

Yep, although they didn't have the number 1 movie of either year both were Sony (Bad Boys and Spider-Man) Disney had $2.9B in 2021, Sony was number 2 with $2.4B. Disney had $1.26B in 2020 ahead of Sony at $1.18B. sources: https://deadline.com/2022/01/2021-worldwide-box-office-studio-rankings-hollywood-market-share-covid-spider-man-no-way-home-1234905569/ https://deadline.com/2021/01/hollywood-movie-studio-global-rankings-2020-global-international-box-office-analysis-2021-outlook-1234665561/
