tupek
Box Office Mojo doesn't show all the re-releases, like when Titanic was put back into the theater fairly recently after it had just gotten out.I think lisa has a compiled list of adjusted original runs and E.T. was higher than Titanic. So Titanic had another release shortly after it earned $600 m?
Jessie
Domestically, E.T. is greater. I have no idea how anyone can adjust OS numbers, since it's impossible with the exchange rates continuously changing. I don't believe your numbers. The original run isn't, it's not even debatable. to find out ET's original run adjusted, I took another movie released in the same year without any re-releases, divided it's adjusted number with its original gross then multiplied that number with ET'S original gross. It falls very short of Titanic according to BOM my numbers are inaccurate however it still isn't as big as Titanic http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=et.htm&adjust_yr=2014&p=.htmNo, Titanic had at least two releases as far as I remember and it doesn't adjust to 1b without themTitanic made 1b adjusted before it ever left the top 10 so it did it without re-releases. Look for yourselfhttp://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=titanic.htm&adjust_yr=2014&p=.htm Edited September 18, 2014 by jessie
norbar
1. Avengers age of ultron - $630 2. Star Wars 7 - $510 3. Hunger Games MJ 2 - $480 4. Minions - $330m 5. Bond 24 - $310m 6. Fast 7 - $260m (though given the change of director it could end up as low as 180 if it's a bad movie) 7. Good Dinosaur - $240m 8. Inside Out $180m 9. Ant Man $180 10. Jurassic World $175m 11. Tomorrowlannd - $160m 12. 50 Shades of Grey - $150m (why do people forget about it?) I know some of these are low but most of you here seem to forget it's impossibl for the market to expand so much and so quick.

James
So you are telling me Titanic didn't make 600M in its first run, because thats were the 1B is coming from? If not how much did Titanic make in its first run? It did: Initial theatrical run[edit]The film received steady attendance after opening in North America on Friday, December 19, 1997. By the end of that same weekend, theaters were beginning to sell out. The film earned $8,658,814 on its opening day and $28,638,131 over the opening weekend from 2,674 theaters, averaging to about $10,710 per venue, and ranking number one at the box office, ahead of the eighteenth James Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies. By New Year's Day, Titanic had made over $120 million, had increased in popularity and theaters continued to sell out. Its highest grossing single day was Saturday, February 14 (Valentine's Day), 1998, on which it earned $13,048,711, more than eight weeks after its North American debut.[75][76] It stayed at number one for fifteen consecutive weeks in North America, which remains a record for any film.[77] The film stayed in theaters in North America for almost ten months, before finally closing on Thursday, October 1, 1998 with a final domestic gross of $600,788,188.[78] Outside North America, the film made double its North American gross, generating $1,242,413,080[79] and accumulating a grand total of $1,843,201,268 worldwide from its initial theatrical run.[80] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic_(1997_film)
TServo2049
Actually, lisa's list (which is based on Consumer Price Index, not average ticket prices) does show Titanic just ahead of E.T. (even narrower margin than BOM).

If people are willing to pay to see a movie, then those numbers should count as well.

Impact
Reissues is a tough thing I've had to bring up so many times like Gone with the Wind DID NOT make that much in its first run. (BOM use to add older films as well as look around for more data back with Brandon and Sean were in charge but that's another story)
